What are the responsibilities and job description for the Swim Instructor position at Los Gatos Community?
SUMMARY: Under general supervision, plans, schedules and implements swimming and water safety instructional programs for a diverse range of participants.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following;
- Prepares age-appropriate and skilled-focus lesson plans for each class
- Plans and effectively organizes class time
- Provides competent, safe instruction in accordance with LGS Recreation Guidelines
- Teaches with encouragement and positive reinforcement
- Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas
- Maintains order in swimming areas
- Conveys information on aquatics program and schedules to students and parents
- Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.)
- Inspects facilities for cleanliness and safety
- Reports unsafe to your supervisor
- Performs other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Principles and practices of effective swimming techniques, goals, and objectives
- Relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Principles and practices for providing high level customer service
- Standard safety practices
ABILITY TO:
- Plan, organize, and implement swimming and water safety classes
- Learn, monitor, and enforce relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
- React to and handle emergencies in a safe and effective manner
- Administer first aid, CPR, and AED if needed
- Demonstrate strong customer service skills
- Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships
- Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing
- Obtain a work permit if under the age of 18
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Prior experience participating in aquatics programs or performing swim instructor duties is desirable.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must have current certificates in CPR, First Aid, and certified as a Water Safety Instructor.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must possess strong swimming skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Work is primarily performed in a swimming pool environment, where stamina is needed to stay in the pool for prolonged periods and to perform moderate to heavy lifting of pool equipment or children and adults who may require removal from the pool. Must possess the mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push and pull equipment, and swim. Vison and hearing must be sufficient to see and hear adults and children in crowded and noisy conditions. Must possess the ability to swim distances and dive to pool depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to swim; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors in a pool environment with wet and slippery conditions. Exposure to variable weather conditions; may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at Aquatics facility.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
