Position Overview

The Lead Bus Driver assists Area Supervisors with school bus operations. The Lead Bus Driver evaluates bus stops, routes, and employee performance; coordinates with parents, principals, and citizens; coordinates school bus availability and out of service tracking; and assists Area Supervisors with responsibilities of the department.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:

  • Performs routine observations of assigned routes and bus stops.
  • Assists in developing bus routes and route changes, in substitute coordination, and in familiarizing drivers with route assignments.
  • Responds to emergency situations, including investigating motor vehicle accidents and completing accident reports.
  • Observes and evaluates bus drivers and attendants.
  • Explains and enforces bus safety rules to employees, students, school administrators, and the general public.
  • Must be available to drive a school bus or attend on a school bus at any time as needed.
  • Evaluates walk zones to ensure they meet regulation requirements such as traffic volume, speed limit, width of the roadway, traffic lanes, and the type of traffic control.
  • Coordinates snow removal and observes road conditions during inclement weather.

 

Qualifications 

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent, minimum age of 20, and minimum of three years of experience as a school bus driver with a proven record of mastering skills of school bus driving.
  • Possess a Commercial Driver’s License with school bus endorsement for a minimum of three years and a completed physician’s certificate (School Bus Driver’s Application for Physician Certificate, form EB.001) which is required under the provision of Section 22.1-178 of the Code of Virginia and Regulations of the Virginia Board of Education) with controlled substance testing, annual physical examinations, and random tests for use of controlled substances and alcohol, as prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education and Loudoun County Public Schools.
  • Knowledge of school bus operations, traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, pupil transportation, personnel management, and/or school fleet maintenance and management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents; demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills; carry out written and oral instructions; and operate a two-way radio.
  • Possess strong time management and organization skills.
  • Exhibit the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to perform basic first aid procedures

Qualifications

Below are the qualifications for this position:

  • High School diploma or GED and possess a Commercial Driver’s License with school bus endorsement
  • Three years of experience as a school bus driver with a proven record of mastering skills of school bus driving
  • Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations
  • Ability to effectively communicate, to work cooperatively and to manage behavior of students on bus
  • Ability to perform basic first aid procedures
  • Knowledge of all responsibilities of school bus drivers and attendants

Physical Requirements

The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this position:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. May be required to climb stairs and ladders; to bend, kneel, crouch, and crawl; to hold, grasp, and turn objects; to feel shapes, size, temperature of objects, and detect odors. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

 

Essential Personnel

Employees who perform the responsibilities of this position for the Department of Support Services are considered essential personnel. Essential personnel are designated employees who must report for work during a delay or emergency situations. A workplace emergency is an unforeseen situation that threatens the staff, pupils, or the public; disrupts or shuts down business operations; or causes physical or environmental damage. Emergencies may be natural or manmade. It is incumbent upon the supervisor to inform and confirm which essential personnel are required to work during emergency closings. Notification and confirmation of the expectation of essential personnel to report to work, or maintain as-needed status, will be executed with as much advanced notice as possible via in-person communication or email.   

 

Telework Disclosure

Employees who perform the responsibilities of the above position have been identified as having the potential to telework. Telework is defined as completing one's duties and responsibilities at a site other than one's assigned duty location. In order to be eligible for telework privileges, an employee must have demonstrated consistent, positive performance and have the support and approval of their direct supervisor. In addition, these employees must have reliable high-speed internet and a designated workspace that allows them privacy while completing sensitive and confidential work.  Employees who are non-exempt and are teleworking will work their required scheduled hours and gain approval from their supervisor if they work more than 8 hours a day or more than 40 hours in a workweek.  Teleworking privileges can be amended, changed, or revoked based upon the performance of the employee, as well as the needs of Loudoun County Public Schools.

Salary Range:  $27.16 - $34.99 hourly
