or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE

OF LOUISIANA STATE GOVERNMENT (State Employee)

This Position May Be Filled As

  • DETAIL: The selected employee may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • PROBATIONAL APPOINTMENT: Current permanent status classified State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment, if selected.
  • TEMPORARY JOB APPOINTMENT: This position may be filled by temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

This position has a Special Entrance Rate of $20.11 per hour.

There Is ‘Premium Pay’ For This Position

A rate between $.50 an hour and $1.00 an hour for each hour worked based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One Year Of Experience In a Correctional, Behavioral, Or Penal Institution With Responsibility For The Security, Custody, Rehabilitation, Or Classification Of Offenders, Or In Law Enforcement Or Security Plus One Of The Following

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR
  • One year of experience in any field; OR
  • Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.

Necessary Special Requirements

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

To serve as lead worker over Corrections Sergeants, who maintain custody and security of inmates at a correctional institution, through supervision, observation, and monitoring of inmate activities and enforcement of related security policies and procedures, to handle special projects, and to serve as a mentor to lower level Corrections Sergeants and Corrections Cadets.

Level Of Work

General from Corrections Lieutenant or higher level security officers.

Supervision Exercised

Lead worker over Corrections Sergeants.

Location of Work:

Department of Public Safety and Corrections; Corrections Services; State adult and juvenile correctional institutions.

Job Distinctions

Differs from Corrections Sergeant by responsibility for serving as leadworker over a minimum of three Corrections Sergeants, by handling specials projects, and by serving as mentor to lower level Corrections Sergeants and Corrections Cadets.

Differs from Corrections Lieutenant by lack of direct supervision over subordinate Corrections Cadets, Corrections Sergeants, and Corrections Sergeants--Master.

Examples of Work

Serves as an assistant to the Corrections Lieutenant and serves as a shift supervisor in the absence of the Corrections Lieutenant.

Assists law enforcement or investigative personnel from other police jurisdictions.

Supervises offenders assigned to specialized areas of the cell block, in the field, on trips, and in the hospital.

Serves as on-the-job training (OJT) instructor to train new officers during the probationary period.

Rotates Through The Following Work Assignments

Serves as a control center officer, coordinating and monitoring inmate movements, institutional counts, emergency responses, and all radio and telephone communications.

Serves as a perimeter security officer, including tower guard (generally armed and authorized to shoot to wound in certain situations.)

Serves as mailroom officer by searching for contraband and maintaining records of inmate property received through the mail.

Supervises offenders and visitors in an authorized visiting area.

Serves as a sally port or gate officer by inspecting vehicles and scrutinizing visitors entering and exiting the institution grounds.

Serves as an armory officer by securing and accounting for disbursements and maintaining all institutional firearms.

Serves as a medical security officer (EMT) providing security in a hospital or an infirmary area and performing emergency medical functions as required. May also staff the ambulance.

Serves as a foreman of an offender labor crew, both skilled and unskilled, including culinary duty.

Serves as a security supervisor in a specialized work area, i.e., maintenance, medical, and warehouse.

Serves as a security officer in an offender canteen area.

Conducts shakedowns for contraband material either individually or as part of a specialized team.

Supervises offenders in recreation activities.

Provides security for offenders engaged in treatment activities.

Serves as a member of a chase team charged with apprehending escapees from the institution or as a member of a tactical team charged with carrying out special security assignments.

Writes reports as mandated by institutional and departmental regulations and submits same to supervisors.

Uses force to restrain inmates, enforce institutional rules, and prevent escapes of inmates.

Serves as an instructor at the Corrections Training Academy.
