About This Position
While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.
The overall function of this position is to maintain and/or make basic repairs to a variety of mobile equipment and small equipment. This position is located in the Section 42 Unit 071 Mechanic Shop of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Mechanic Supervisor B. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.
Positions maintain, repair, and overhaul both light and heavy mobile equipment or complex mechanical systems on mobile equipment.

Job Duties And Responsibilities
45% Diagnose and repair of electrical systems, computer systems, electronic systems, brake systems, fuel injection systems, a/c systems, heating systems, etc. and applying a knowledge of how these systems work and other non-mechanical systems as they tie-in with and effect the operations of mechanical systems. Locates defects and causes of malfunction through the use of a wide range of test equipment such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzer, vacuum testers, ignition times, tachometers, ammeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscope, computerized scanners, etc. and determine the nature and extent of repairs necessary and selects the best work procedures to accomplish repairs. Gathers all technical manuals in book or computerized form, to preform job
30% Responsible for complete overhaul of all systems and assemblies on automobiles, trucks, buses, light, heavy, mobile and small stationary equipment which have gas and diesel engines, electrical, air conditioners, computers, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, steering and all other mechanical features.
10% Field repair on equipment such as draglines, dozers, grade-all, tractors, mowers, and other types of construction equipment, as well as light and heavy vehicles.
5% Service or repair of mechanical power systems for moveable bridges, ferry boats, as well as maintenance of repair for heavy duty hoists and winches.
5% Provide instruction and assistance to Mechanic 1-3 and Trades Apprentices when they are assisting in the accomplishment of major repairs. Prepare paperwork such as: daily work reports, parts orders, evaluation forms, inspection forms, leave slips, etc. Clean up shop and work areas.
5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to emergency/disaster support activities.
