NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION
The Custodian is to provide custodial and minor maintenance for agency, classrooms, offices, common areas, utilities, equipment, fixtures, and materials for the facility and grounds. Follow health and safety procedures and perform safety inspections and checklists to ensure facility and grounds are hazard free.
JOB FUNCTIONS
ESSENTIAL-
- Be familiar with and adhere to the Head Start Program Performance Standards, State of Louisiana licensing requirements, Office of Public Health, State Fire Marshall, and the PTI HS ISPs and policies and procedures.
- Ensure regular maintenance and upkeep of outdoor environments, playgrounds, outdoor structures, and parking lots.
- Complete daily check-up of playgrounds as well as monthly check up of facilities and buildings using the Health and Safety checklist.
- Report major repairs and maintenance needs.
- Daily cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms, office, bathrooms, and common areas, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, spraying/wiping high-touch surfaces, and emptying trash.
- Seasonal deep cleaning and maintenance of building interior and exterior (i.e. Floor buffing, carpet cleaning, pressure washing sidewalk).
- Perform routine inspections and regular upkeep of interior and exterior areas to ensure areas are free of safety hazards, trash, weeds, and other foreign materials
- Assist with moving office and classroom furniture, fixtures, and equipment to support increasing staffing changes, relocations, remodels, program expansion and custodial requirements
- Ensure that safety and health procedures are followed as directed by the Center Director and/or established policy.
- Maintains an accurate inventory of supplies and equipment, and prepares requisitions to Center Director for approval
- Safeguards all equipment and supplies, and accounts for missing or damaged items; Reports needs for major repairs to the center director or center director assistant.
- Possess basic knowledge of OSHA Standards and compliance requirements.
- Must be on call for emergency situations such as investigate alarm systems, accurate building inspections and weather-related emergencies as needed.
- Participate in staff meetings, conferences, training sessions and workshops as assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding staff and family information.
- Fulfill role as mandated reporter as stated in Child Abuse and Neglect Policy.
MARGINAL-
- Provide courteous and prompt service to all internal and external clients. Prioritize and address requests and assignments in a professional manner to develop cooperative relationships and to ensure that client confidentiality is assured.
- Identify opportunities and recommend methods to improve service, work processes and financial performance, e.g. expense management. Assists in the implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist co-workers in the completion of tasks and assignments to ensure continuity of service. Orient new co-workers and actively support teamwork throughout the organization.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Associate degree is preferred.
Work Experience:
- Prior maintenance and general repair experience is required.
Special Skills:
- Computer literacy in email, word processing and internet navigation is required.
- Excellent decision-making and communications skills.
- High degree of tact and professionalism.
- Strong positive attitude.
Other Considerations:
- Some travel between sites may be necessary.

Exposure to blood, saliva and bodily fluids is common. Proper training and protective equipment are required to avoid direct contact from blood, saliva and bodily fluids is required. Due to the nature of this position, various carpentry, plumbing and general repair tools will be required, which will expose the incumbent to loud noises, sharp objects, and airborne particles. Proper protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times when performing maintenance and repair duties.
