Position Summary
This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Surgical Services department to ensure goals, objectives, and deadlines are met while managing performance of assigned employees.
Essential Functions
Performs the daily duties associated with the management of the surgical team such as:
? Works with HR, COO, and Director of Surgical Services in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of applicants for the department including job description development and maintenance.
? Develops, revises, and maintains policies for the Surgical Services department.
? Development, implementation, and monitoring of policies, procedures, strategies, and action plans related to organ preservation and perfusion technologies.
? Collaborate with the Education Department to plan, coordinate, and direct training for staff development programs involving surgical services personnel.
? Collaborate with team members to develop and implement strategies to optimize organ preservation.
? Maintains current knowledge of educational and training requirements as well as best practices for organ preservation.
? Plans, designs, and directs work assignments for department employees.
? Evaluates employee performance on a quarterly basis and provides appropriate feedback.
? Ensures employee compliance with all HR policies and procedures.
? Works with HR in the development, growth, and performance management of assigned staff.
? Coaches/councils assigned employees as needed.
? Utilizes available data to assess employee performance.
? Establishes and communicates job responsibilities and performance expectations to assure mutual understanding of desired results.
? Assists in development and execution of the LOPA’s strategic plans, developing department goals and tactical plans to assist in meeting organizational objectives.
? Quickly and effectively communicates and troubleshoots complaints and challenges.
Job Role Expectations
? Oversees the creation of the various Surgical Services team schedules to ensure call schedule coverage that optimizes case coverage.
? Leads consistent, meaningful monthly departmental meetings and provides minutes for review including thorough case reviews that benefit staff engagement.
? Assists IT/Facilities/Material Management personnel in overseeing department and employee equipment.
? Takes active role in quality compliance and process improvement
? Works in conjunction with the Quality department to address quality concerns and areas for improvement.
? Utilizes available data to assess performance of the department.
? Participates in QAPI activities and adherence to policies.
? Leads department through process improvement efforts.
? Resolves department occurrence reports.
? Creates and fosters positive professional relationships for enhanced collaboration with internal and external customers, partners, and stakeholders.
? Maintains compliance with all applicable regulatory/accrediting agencies/entities in collaboration with the department Director.
? Keeps direct supervisor updated on issues/challenges within the department through weekly reporting and/or monthly meetings.
? Participates in assigned leadership meetings/trainings.
? Assists direct supervisor in the development and maintenance of the annual departmental budget, as needed.
? Maintains and approves timecards of direct reports.
? Represent LOPA at local and national conferences.
? Develop and conduct presentations to internal and external stakeholders, as needed.
? Effectively communicate and troubleshoot challenges with hospital and transplant center partners.
? Adheres to all LOPA, OPTN, and other regulatory guidelines relevant to the recovery, packaging, and labeling of organs.
? Adheres to all AAMI guidelines relevant to the decontamination and sterilization of surgical instrumentation.
? Maintains CEU’s/competencies for licenses and certifications as needed for the role.
? Obtains designation of Certified Transplant Preservationist or Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator and obtains CPTC credits to maintain certification.
? Actively seeks out and participates in approved process improvement projects.
? Seeks out external educational opportunities relevant to the job role and presents findings to surgical staff during monthly meetings.
? Participates in continual onsite evaluation of staff by:
? Participating in a minimum of 1 operating room case per month.
? Participating in a minimum of 1 NRP operating room per month.
? Participating in a minimum of 1 liver organ perfusion machine per quarter.
? Continually assess techniques and processes that will guide clinical practice.

Role Progression
? This role may be eligible for progression to a Director position if one is made available. Promotion to Director will be at the discretion of the Executive team.
Work Environment
? Possible exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, airborne illnesses, hazardous materials, pharmacological agents with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
? May, at times, have exposure to blood, packaged organs and tissues for transplant and/or research in a hospital setting or while in the office.
? Possible mental and visual fatigue associated with detailed work.
? This position requires travel to donor hospitals for evaluation of staff and processes via ground or air.
? This position may also require travel to other OPOs and associated agencies to observe and learn industry practices.

Work Hours
Full time salaried position. Work hours include office hours, phone support to surgical staff on a 24/7 basis on non-PTO days. Potential weekend onsite back-up support if needed. Participate in Surgical Manager call for operating room related questions and issues.
Education and Experience
? Bachelor’s degree preferred or 1-2 years of related experience and/or training.
? Minimum of one year supervisory experience preferred.
