Description

Overview of Job :

This essential position is responsible for leading and overseeing the daily operations of all the surgery and shelter functions including high-volume spay / neuter clinic, special procedures surgeries, and the shelter medical clinic. This role actively promotes spay and neuter, and educates the public on responsible pet ownership as well as promoting and supporting the LA / SPCA'S programs and mission.

Excellent organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail, the Medical Manager is responsible for :

  • Showing compassion for people and pets.
  • Highly organized, with excellent planning and prioritization skills, the role oversees and ensures that the shelter and surgery programs are optimized to ensure efficient and effective use of all resources.

As a creative problem solver, the Medical Manager :

  • Collaborate with the finance and operations team to ensure proper inventory controls for purchasing, storage and tracking of medications, including controlled substances logs, are maintained in such a way to minimize waste.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of outside veterinarians, specialists and emergency veterinary care for dogs and cats with the animal care teams and communicate treatment plans and medical results in a timely manner to ensure the highest standards of care of consistently maintained.
  • Manage veterinary support staff responsible for all duties related to providing shelter animal medical care, disease prevention protocol, spay / neuter surgeries, implementing treatment plans, and routing appropriate animal outcomes.
  • Work to anticipate and resolve conflict & promote open communication between volunteers, staff, and patrons. Solicit employee input regarding their work and workplace.
  • Regular and consistent communication and collaboration with other departments and locations to promote and support a team culture throughout the organization.

  • Interested in continuous learning, this individual regularly seeks additional medical knowledge through outside resources and by partnering with veterinary staff to understand their current caseload and needs.
  • Results oriented, this individual is knowledgeable about operational goals for all clinic programs and is regularly analyzing data and implementing continuous improvement solutions.
  • Work with a team of managers and directors to implement best practices and evaluate areas for growth through open discussion of concerns and feedback.
  • Ensuring the organization is able to adapt and persevere, the Medical Manager :

  • Attention to detail is vital, as the position is responsible for reviewing and updating Standard Operating Procedures for wellness and SN and shelter clinics
  • Act as a point of contact for medical emergencies and coordinate with veterinarians and animal care staff in a timely manner to ensure that emergency situations are handled appropriately.
  • Focusing on equity and accessibility for our diverse organization, the Medical Manager :

  • Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance and promoting a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to ensure proper cross-training as needed to ensure continuity of clinic operations.
  • Demonstrating emotional intelligence, the Medical Manager :

  • Possessing a collaborative mindset, incumbent regularly works with others to produce innovative solutions to maximize efficiency and positive client experience; Remains calm under stress and handles several problems or tasks at once.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential in order to build and sustain positive relationships with rescue groups, volunteer trappers and community members.
  • Skilled at performance management and employee development, this individual helps direct reports to consistently manage their employees' performance. Important skill sets include providing constructive feedback, goal setting and developing training plans.
  • Promotes and supports the LA / SPCA's programs and mission.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all situations.
  • Obtain certification to perform humane euthanasia
  • Education and / or Experience :

  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must have 5 years' experience working in a veterinarian clinic
  • Must have three years management or supervisory experience
  • Associate's degree preferred; High School Diploma / GED required
  • RVT, LVT Highly Preferred
  • Just a couple of other important points :

  • You should not be allergic to animals or nut products and must be able to work around all animals; you may be potentially subject to animal and insect bites and scratches.
  • Must be able to work with industrial strength cleaners and disinfectants as we have a very strict cleaning protocol.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; push and pull heavy objects; bend, twist, reach; perform strenuous physical activities.
  • Must be able to act as a first responder during emergency situations.
  • Working Environment

    Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches

    Salary Range : $70,000 - $75,000 per year (commensurate with experience)

    Sign-On Bonus : $5,000
