What are the responsibilities and job description for the Louisiana State Trooper position at Louisiana State Police?
Once hired, the goal of this position and that of the Louisiana State Police is to promote public safety in our state through aggressive traffic enforcement, criminal investigation, administrative regulation, public education, and community involvement.
Responsibilities of Cadet:
As a commissioned State Police Cadet who serves as a State Police representative in an assigned geographical area. A State Police Cadet is in training to become a commissioned Trooper. The Cadet must successfully complete the P.O.S.T. curriculum and pass the P.O.S.T. examination. The Cadet must possess the ability to perform the task presented during the Academy training experience such a writing reports, qualifying with firearm driving pursuit vehicle, learning laws and codes, learning crash investigation, etc. The Cadet must have the potential to learn, and must demonstrate the ability by performing the assigned tasks, primarily through written examinations, and evaluated scenarios, to the degree expected of an Academy graduate. The Cadet must be able to apply these skills to the satisfaction of a Field Training Officer after graduation from the academy. In addition to possessing a valid Louisiana driver’s license, the incumbent must meet the minimum departmental certification requirements along with periodic recertification (including but not limited to firearms, defensive tactics, intoxilyzer, radar, first aid, defensive driving, police pursuit driving and standardized field sobriety testing, etc.) throughout employment as a State Police Officer.
Qualifications:
Applicants for Cadet Class 107 must meet one of the following criteria:
· Two (2) years of experience as a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Level 1 (or out-of-state equivalent) certified peace officer in a full-time position (whose job duties include armed duty with the power of arrest); or
· A minimum of sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited college or university (must provide transcript or degree); or
· Any two (2) year combination of Options 1 and 2 above, whereby thirty (30) semester hours will be equivalent to one (1) year of experience; or
· Three (3) years of continuous active military duty in the United States Military (must provide a DD-214 or letter from current commanding officer verifying service), effective October 1, 2001.
