Job Description:
The Academic Advisor has academic oversight for teams as assigned & reports to the Assistant Director of Academic Affairs. The position will supervise an Assistant Academic Advisor/Intern (WAE), serve as main point of contact for Project Graduation for assigned teams, and co-manage class attendance monitoring for assigned teams. The goal of the Academic Center’s team is to provide a student-centered approach to learning, ensure academic progress toward degree and eligibility requirements, and ultimately develop a structure for our student-athletes to earn their degree. The Academic Advisor will serve as the student-athlete's academic advocate.
Job Responsibilities:
Operations & Personnel Management (50%):
- Operations & Personnel Management: Manage the daily academic operations of assigned teams; Manage a portion of the academic affairs team including an Assistant Academic Advisor/Intern (WAE); Mentor, develop and evaluate direct reports on a regular basis; Keep direct report abreast of SEC and NCAA academic progress requirements; Meet weekly with coaches to report on student-athletes progress in detail including current grades, academic progress, and concerns; Communicate with coaches regarding any academic functions, policies and procedures; Utilize standard grade report to communicate student-athlete progress to appropriate constituents;
- Facilitate dissemination of faculty progress reports to coaches and alert them of any student-athletes experiencing difficulty; Communicate to academic advisors and coaches the eligibility status of their student-athletes; Work in conjunction with Student Learning and other pertinent units to develop a support structure to enhance learning outcomes; Assist in monitoring study hall; Communicate regularly with coaches, admissions, and compliance regarding potential recruits; Provide preliminary admission and initial eligibility assessments of prospective student-athlete to coaching staffs;
- Participate in the recruitment process by meeting with prospective student-athletes and providing them with information about LSU's academic programs and the Academic Center's support programs.
Student Support (40%):
- Responsible for the oversight of the transfer evaluation process of prospective student-athletes for assigned teams; Develop academic plans that outline degree completion within four years; Monitor assigned student-athletes eligibility and communicate their progress to the appropriate constituents; Work with college academic advisors in advising student-athletes to meet degree requirements; Provide professional and career advice for assigned student-athletes; Oversee and monitor graduation progress and respond to any requests for information regarding student-athletes degree progress; Assist student-athletes with scheduling of courses ensuring that course schedules are balanced and fit the time and season constraints of the student-athletes;
- Provide letters of recommendation and submit nominations for awards and scholarships for graduate and professional school; Respond to and initiate faculty communication regarding student-athletes with poor academic progress and work cooperatively to design strategies for improved performance; Formulate academic success plans for student-athletes experiencing academic difficulty; Meet weekly with student-athletes with learning challenges and report progress to appropriate constituents; Serve as a mentor to the student-athletes; Inform and advise student-athletes of all SEC and NCAA eligibility requirements;
- Provide professional-level support & programs to student-athletes in accordance with the regulations of LSU, the SEC, the NCAA, HIPPA, FERPA, & ADA.
Other Responsibilities (10%):
- Assist with additional projects as assigned, such as internal player development program, guest coaching, Project Graduation, class attendance monitoring, and Strategic Plan committee; Act as liaison to admissions and other campus offices; Other duties as assigned by leadership.
Additional Requirements
- FERPA -As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
Additional Information
- Must be willing to work irregular hours, nights, and some weekends.
- Demonstrate leadership skills and proficiency in administering academic support programming to prepare student-athletes for life after post-secondary education and demonstrate an understanding of student development.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree
Specific Experience: Knowledge of NCAA and SEC regulations.

Specific Experience: Preference given to degrees in counseling, social work, student development, higher education, psychology, or related field. Two years of experience working with a diverse population within secondary and/or post-secondary institutions.
