This position is located at LSU of Alexandria, in Alexandria, Louisiana (Rapides parish).
Mission:

We work closely with all academic and support departments to provide continuous quality support for students from matriculation through graduation. We focus on academic and personal achievement throughout early interventions and systematic tracking of students.
Summary:
The Advising & Retention Specialist will advise freshman students and guide them in developing a plan of study that meets degree requirements. This position assists with course selection, class scheduling, co-curricular opportunities and related advising duties. The specialist monitors student progress and suggests and implements corrective actions when students encounter academic or personal difficulties. This positions coordinates with other University departments regarding challenges that students face.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide advising services to prospective and currently enrolled students. This includes one-on-one in person appointments, email correspondence, phone calls, zoom sessions, group advising sessions, and walk-ins. Topics discussed include coursework, credits, grades, GPA, student life, and college success strategies
- Works closely with students to provide support and counsel in order to identify academic options such as degree programs, extracurricular activities, exchange programs, research and internships that align with academic and career goals
- Monitor progress of advisees and respond to their questions and concerns
- Work with special population groups (students on probation/suspension) to implement effective interventions to aid in their success
- Provide reports on and monitor trends for advisees
- Coordinate meetings and enhance communication with academic departments
- Collaborate with academic units and student services departments throughout the University to facilitate comprehensive student support
- Follow office communication plan which includes emails, calls, and meetings with a variety of student groups throughout the year
- Works closely with Promise Students to ensure academic success by identifying appropriate interventions
- Participates in training efforts for faculty advising
- Proficient with general education curriculum, office policies and procedures, and Degree Navigator
Reports To: Assistant Director of Advising
Required Qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree
Minimum one year of job-related experience
Self-motivator, independent, cooperative, flexible, creative
Effective verbal and written communications skills and effective presentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or related field
One year experience in higher education, preferably in student support or retention
Hours: Eight (8) hours per day, Monday –Friday 40 hours a week. Must be able to work outside of typical work hours for student events/programs.
