Job Description:
Responsible for managing departmental website, social media presence, departmental events marketing, including news links. Develop and implement science outreach activities & events for LSU Department of Biological Sciences undergraduates & other LSU events. Includes status change announcements on new faculty/staff to promote & celebrate the career achievements through various mechanisms. Provide assistance & direction to faculty/staff in regards to individual & lab websites. Collaborate with office staff to activate a productive program to establish ties with alumni; plan, research & implement for release of a digital newsletter, including coordinating office staff quarterly functions. Works collaboratively with the Office of Communications and University Relations and adheres to the standards set therein.
Duties:
30% Web Master: Create, maintain and manage departmental website content. Initiate revisions and updates to keep website current. Advise Biological Sciences faculty and staff with development and updates to their lab and individual websites. Update and enhance departmental social media accounts (Facebook, twitter, etc.). Formulate, maintain, update and manage all in-house media content. Maintain and support departmental legacy HTML sites.
30% Marketing; Publicity; Alumni Relations: Work with the Office of Public Relations, the College of Science Director of Communication, LSU's Division of Strategic Communication and other marketing professionals within the college/university to disseminate information and promotional material about departmental events to campus, and local media. Work with College and LSU Foundation in assisting in planning of events directly related to the departments donors. Create and publish a bi-annual alumni digital newsletter in association with LSU Alumni Association. Works collaboratively with the Office of Communications and University Relations and adheres to the standards set therein.
Record and report on newsletter engagement. Plan, research, write and release a monthly digital newsletter encompassing our departmental successes. Create professor status change announcements including hiring, promotion, and retiring of department professors to promote and celebrate achievements of our staff. Administer press releases along with LSU's Division of Strategic Communications to highlight faculty achievements for publication.
25% Outreach: Develop and implement science outreach, educational activities and events for LSU Department of Biological Sciences undergraduates and at LSU events (Fall Fest, GeauxScience, LSU Day at State Capitol; and monthly departmental events for social/outreach purposes). Solicit departmental stories from faculty and staff; take photographs at departmental functions for website content; review website to verify that branding information is correct. Produce and disseminate the Department of Biological Science news links. Coordinate outreach to local schools to provide an avenue for students to see the research being done by our labs/researchers. Attend monthly and annual College of Science Communicators' meetings and monthly Campus Communicators' Meetings.
10% Internal Marketing: Content to include class offering advertisements, lecture series promotions, departmental news, LSU and College of Science related news, and affiliated departmental clubs news as deemed appropriate. Foster concepts, design and/or provide art direction for all marketing and communication items, including brochures, fliers, posters, advertisements, forms, and displays. Maintains, disperses and tracks all centralized department correspondence. Create, maintain, and enforce posting guidelines for departmental announcements boards. Creates and maintains all itineraries for dept seminars and is hospitality chairperson for all dept visitors. Maintains dept directory database and dept phone lists, maintains directory board in LSB lobby. Coordinates scheduling 4 conference rooms in LSB/LSA. This includes scheduling seminars for any dept on campus, student committee meetings, and others. Designs and posts office fliers and signs for various events and functions thought the year.
5% Attend trainings for website accessibility; Attend trainings for LSU Branding and best practices and ensure that all published materials complement the university's overall marketing and communications efforts. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and one year of HTML website design experience. LSU is dedicated to fostering an environment where our employees feel appreciated for their skills and individuality. Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's in marketing/ communication and experience with Omni Content Management, Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Photoshop and Illustrator. Science education background.
Due to the nature of the position and/or responsibilities, in times of emergencies and/or University closures, this position is considered essential. It may be required to assist the Office of Communications and University Relations on necessary communications matters in times of crisis, including potentially working in LSU’s Emergency Operations Center during those times.
