Job Description :
Provides academic support for graduate students, graduate faculty and graduate support staff.
Job Responsibilities :
Leadership in Academic Support and Advising : Provides strategic leadership and oversight for academic advising services for graduate students, including non-matriculating students, faculty, and graduate support staff. Ensures adherence to University policies and procedures and evaluates all student forms, withdrawals, and appeals. Conducts degree audits and ensures that processes are carried out efficiently and accurately. Establishes and strengthens relationships with administrators and faculty to ensure effective communication and resolution of student needs and challenges. Serves as a key liaison for faculty and staff regarding academic planning, curriculum development, and career outcomes. Represents the Graduate School at key academic meetings and events, collaborating with programs and schools to align academic services with institutional goals. 40%
Training, Supervision, and Team Development : Provides training and mentorship to academic advisors and support staff. In collaboration with the Assistant Dean, develops and implements professional development programs to enhance staff skills in student advising, academic support, and administrative processes. Act as a team lead to staff, monitors performance, and provides feedback to ensure excellence in student services. Cultivates a collaborative team environment, encouraging continuous improvement in processes and procedures to promote student success. 20%
Student Support and Retention Leadership : Leads initiatives to proactively identify and support at-risk students, including those on academic probation, warning, or financial holds. Collaborates with key university stakeholders, including the Registrar, Financial Aid, and faculty, to address barriers to student progress. Oversees the development and implementation of strategies for supporting student persistence, retention, and timely graduation. Advises academically dismissed students on reinstatement processes and works to ensure their successful re-entry into academic programs. 20%
Program Development : In collaboration with the Assistant Dean, develop and execution of workshops, programs, and initiatives that promote student persistence, retention, and academic and career development. Collaborates with key stakeholders on orientation, professional development events, recruitment, and student engagement activities. Utilizes data to assess program effectiveness and make recommendations for improvements. 10%
Cross-Departmental Collaboration and Special Projects : Engages in cross-training to provide leadership support across other Graduate School functions as needed. Leads or participates in special projects, working groups, and task forces as needed by the Assistant Dean of Academic Services , Associate Dean and Dean of the Graduate School. 10%
Additional Requirements :
FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and / or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
