Summary Objective:

  • The purpose of this position is to conduct firearms training and tactics instruction.
  • This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Maintains physical and computerized inventories of LMPD owned weapons and ammunition.

  • Performs specialized, technical, and similar duties to support LMPD’s Firearms Training Center.

  • Maintains the weapon armory.

  • Provides firearms training and qualifications for sworn employees and recruits.

  • Provides personal instruction to sworn officers and/or recruits, i.e. remedial instruction.

  • Develops lesson plans and curricula for firearms and less lethal weapons.

  • Operates, demonstrates, and provides instruction on a variety of weapons including shotguns, handguns, and patrol rifles.

  • Incorporates new and advanced training aides into existing programs as appropriate.

  • Reviews department policies, procedures, laws, codes and like items relating to the use of force and recommends changes as needed.

  • Conducts inspections of weapons, including handguns, shotguns, and patrol rifles.

  • Provides maintenance and repairs to departmentally-owned and sworn officers personally-owned weapon(s).

  • Orders range supplies within budget guidelines and maintains inventory control for same.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.

  • Two (2) years of experience working with weapons as a firearms instructor or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
    OR

  • Current or former KLEC (or other US state certified if not a resident of Kentucky) certified firearms instructor.
    OR

  • Current or former Glock certified firearms instructor and/or Glock certified armorer or advanced armorer

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Specialized training in firearms use, firearms safety, firearms tactics, and weapons maintenance or repair.

  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or have any criminal action pending against them.

  • Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis.

  • Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening.

  • Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.

  • Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

  • Must not have retired, resigned, ore separated from employment with a law enforcement agency under investigation or due to pending or final disciplinary actions.

  • Applicants who have illegally bought or used marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within six months of application will be disqualified.

  • Applicants who have illegally sold marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within one year of application will be disqualified.

  • Applicants who have illegally bought, sold, or used any controlled substance or narcotic drug, other than marijuana, without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

  • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

  • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

  • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

  • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

  • Traffic; Moving machinery.

  • Electrical shock; Heights.
