What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laborer position at Louisville Metro Government?
The purpose of this position is to perform general labor, sanitation and maintenance duties.
This class works under close supervision according to set procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
• Vacuums, dusts, mops, strips and waxes floors, washes walls and performs other routine custodial duties.
• Dusts and polishes furniture, equipment, and work area surfaces.
• Mows and trims grass, cuts weeds, trims and prunes shrubs and trees, rakes leaves and debris, collects litter from outside areas, removes snow from sidewalks and public areas, and performs other grounds maintenance tasks.
• Washes and cleans interior glass windows and doors, walls, baseboards and ceilings.
• Obtains chairs, tables and audio-visual equipment, prepares meeting rooms for use, and lifts and moves furniture, equipment and supplies.
• Operates and uses vacuum cleaners, buffers, carpet shampooers, lawn mowers, weed eaters, snow plows, and cleaning chemicals and materials.
• Transports items and materials from suppliers, vendors and other agencies, and performs work to assist with special events or seasonal activities.
• Cleans bathrooms and replaces supplies.
• Changes light bulbs using a six-foot or shorter ladder.
• Empties waste containers.
• Cleans sidewalks and steps of assigned location or facility.
RIVERSIDE, FARNSLEY-MOREMEN LANDING
• Instructs new employees in cleaning techniques.
• Removes silt and debris from dock area, and operates handicapped lift.
• Performs related work.
SOLID WASTE
• Lifts heavy objects.
• Collects junk, trash, debris and litter along roadways.
• Picks up bagged leaves and bundled limbs.
• Uses a variety of hand and power tools in performing maintenance on equipment, buildings, and other structures.
• Posts street cleaning signs with a staple gun as directed.
• Cleans underpasses and viaducts with a broom, shovel and rake.
• Rides on the back of garbage packers to empty litter baskets and poly carts.
• Removes street cleaning signs as directed.
• Mows and trims grass, cuts weeds, trims and prunes shrubs and trees, rakes leaves and debris, collects litter from outside areas, removes snow from sidewalks and public areas, and performs other grounds maintenance tasks.

• Prepares streets and alleys for patching and paving cracked sealing.
• Cleans up debris left from preparing and patching pot holes.
• Places asphalt in pot holes.
• Tamps down hot asphalt mix.
• Covers tack material with sand.
• Places gravel in holes, alleys, and shoulders.
• Digs and sets post holes.
• Places cable and guard rails on perimeter of streets.
• Places signs, cones, and other needed safety items on streets when construction work is to be done.
• Heats liquid asphalt, judges amount needed for one day’s use, and attaches to vehicle for transportation to job sites.
• Cleans equipment and ensures that tack pot and hose are cleaned and in proper working order for subsequent jobs.
• Levels asphalt and gravel for paving operations of streets and alleys.
• Sets forms, pours and finishes concrete.
• Repairs and maintains barricades.
• Performs custodial duties.
• Cuts grass and performs other gournds keeping functions.
• Assists in snow removal operations.
• Calibrates and operates pesticide application equipment.
• Assists with road maintenance equipment and materials inventory.
• Boards access to vacant buildings and structures.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Must wear personal protective and safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

POLICE
• Must not have been convicted of a felony.
• Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis.
• Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.
YOUTH CENTER
• Must pass an annual tuberculin test.
• Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within 10 days of initial assignment.
HALL OF JUSTICE
• Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment.
PUBLIC WORKS – BY ASSIGNMENT
• Must be licensed as a Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator, Category 3 and 19, by the State of Kentucky or obtain within 3 months of employment (KRS 217B).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
• Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
