Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to supervise an animal taxonomic area including mammals, birds, and ectotherms.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

- Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
- Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Assists in budget preparation and monitors and controls expenditures.
- Inspects animal exhibits, determines maintenance and repair needs and assigns task to subordinate employees.
- Participates in and assists with the control and alleviation of emergency situations and conditions.
- Supervises zoogeographic and bio-climatic zone facilities and exhibits.
- Designs exhibits and holding facilities to meet conservation management and safety needs.
- Coordinates exhibit propping that emulates habitat, and prepares graphics.
- Consults with veterinarian staff concerning animal health and dietary issues.
- Provides technical assistance and instruction concerning animal management and bio-conservation.
- Assists with the preparation and logistics of acquisition, disposition, transfer and exhibition of animals.
- Prepares and conducts breeding and research projects.
- Presents programs and education classes.
- Evaluates and revises acquisition and species policies and procedures.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology, Biology or related discipline.
- Three (3) years of zoo curator or zoo animal care experience over mammals, birds, or poikilotherms or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must be on 24-hour call.- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
