Environmental Health & Safety Technician II

Overview

Under general supervision, the EH&S Technician II will support the institute in the areas of environmental safety and health ensuring compliance with city, state and federal regulations. The EH&S Technician II will conduct radiation surveys and conduct radiation training for employees. Performs noise surveys and laboratory safety inspections. Collects, analyzes, ships and packs samples. The ES&H Technician II will collect, sort and prepare wastes for disposal. Will be responsible for maintaining equipment for emergencies and will respond to accidents such as spills, fires, and falls.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of three years of related work experience in industrial hygiene or safety; or four years of related work experience working in a laboratory setting; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. Must be eligible for certifification as a Hazardous Material Handler.

 

Must have a basic understanding of general safety, fire safety, industrial hygiene and/or environmental safety. Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, EPA, NRC and DOE regulations preferred.

 

Must have superior professional-level written and verbal communication skills; a high degree of professionalism, excellent judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Demonstrated ability in managing a wide variety of tasks and projects simultaneously while meeting multiple deadlines is required. Must have the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Preferred computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, Outlook and the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed.

 

A post-offer, pre-placement physical examination, ability to obtain required vaccinations, and successful completion of various background checks are required. Applicants must be willing to work in an ABSL-3 environment and with radiation. Ability to gain and maintain access to Kirtland Air Force base (KAFB) is required. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and wear a respirator.

 

Relocation may be offered for this position.

 

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a variety of settings including office and laboratory environments, as well as in outdoor areas.  Will frequently stand, walk, sit, kneel, crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, etc.), reach/work overhead, frequently lift/carry/push/pull heavy objects that weigh up to 50 pounds and perform desk-based computer tasks.  Will wear personal protective equipment which may include a respirator.  Will work in close proximity to an environment containing research animals and will be required to work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present which may require vaccinations.The above is intended to describe the general requirements for the position and should not be interpreted as an exhaustive statement of physical requirements.  The Institute will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires an accommodation to perform the essential functions of the position.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience.
