What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant position at Lowcountry Infectious Diseases?
REQUIREMENTS
- Current CNA, RMA, CMA, LPN or CCMA license that has not been previously revoked or on probation.
- Two years experience preferred.
- Proficient keyboard and computer skills.
- Performance must be consistent at all times. Must be able to handle high levels of stress satisfactorily at all times and complete job duties within the required time frames.
- Must consistently give patients prompt, friendly and professional care without discrimination due to patient’s advanced directives, age, race, religion, sex, handicap, sexual preference or disease.
- Must be consistently congenial and professional with co-workers, managers, physicians, customers and vendors.
- CE hours required: 5 hours of in-service training annually, or as required by license/ certification, or proof of competency. CE/CME Certificates must be turned in to the CEO. In-Service training hours must be documented in the Continuing Education & Training notebook located in the CEO’s office.
- Must be able to lift 30 lbs and help patients in and out of their wheelchair when necessary.
- Must comply with all company policies and procedures and confidentiality guidelines.
- Must comply with all HIPAA, OSHA, and compliance regulations at all times.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Check patient’s charts a minimum of one day prior to appointment to make sure all labs, x-rays, or other test results previously ordered are in the chart. Make sure all records are present for new patients.
- As infectious disease patients arrive for their appointments, put the patient in a room, take their vital signs and record in the vital signs tab in the EMR, reconcile the patient’s medication list, confirm their allergies, and record in the prescriptions tab in the EMR, record the patient’s pharmacy, and notify the provider.
- As infectious disease patients leave, make sure they have a clinical summary if requested, make sure they get to the check out desk with their router, make sure they have lab orders entered in the system or hard copy in hand, radiology, pathology, etc.
- Perform PICC removals, suture removals, dressing changes, phlebotomy draws, etc using sterile techniques.
- Assist the providers as needed with the patients.
- Fill prescriptions and prescription refill requests using e-prescribe software in the EMR. Obtain prior authorization from insurance companies when necessary.
- Place orders for all labs, x-rays, or other tests as ordered by the provider. Use the appropriate request form. Obtain prior authorization from insurance companies when necessary.
- Scan and Zoom ALL clinical paperwork into the EMR and file by patient.
- Check clinical electronic faxes throughout the day and print if signature needed, otherwise Zoom.
- Answer all incoming clinical phone calls. Check the voicemail system at least twice throughout the day, take messages, and return phone calls. Make sure that you have detailed information regarding the patient’s complaint or question before you present to the provider.
- Keep exam rooms clean, ready for patients to be seen, and stocked with the appropriate supplies.
- Inform clinical manager when medical supplies are running low via the clinical supplies request form. Inform clinical manager when travel medicine supplies are running low via the travel medicine request form.
- Take care of all medical phone calls and requests as directed by the provider, i.e. prescription refills, referrals to other doctors, etc.
- Make sure routing slip gets to the receptionist after the patient has been seen.
- Text consults and calls to providers through our secure online system.
- Other duties as assigned by the clinical manager or CEO.

Pay: Up to $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 36 – 40 per week
