JOB SUMMARY 

The Health Information Technician is responsible to the Director of Quality & Compliance. Manages patient health information and medical records in accordance with HIPAA and agency policy. Administers the electronic medical record system and document imaging system. Collects and analyzes patient data using appropriate classification systems and medical terminologies. Performs other duties as assigned. 

 PRIMARY JOB DUTIES 

1. Maintains both the electronic and paper Medical Record by filing and updating current records, auditing and coordinating storage of closed medical records and responding to patient health information requests and other record maintenance activities.  

2. Assists the clinical staff with administrative duties including tracking and obtaining physician certifications, written orders and medical plan of care signatures.  

3. Possess comprehensive knowledge of medical, administrative, ethical and legal requirements and standards related to healthcare delivery and the privacy of protected health information and HIPAA.  

4. Interacts with all levels of the agency—clinical, financial, administrative, and information technology—that employ patient data in decision-making and everyday operations.  

5. Ensures the quality of medical records by verifying their completeness, accuracy, and proper entry into computer systems.  

6. Annually attends continuing education to enhance job skills and maintain certification.  

7. Appropriately communicates information in accordance with LCFL policies and procedures.  

8. Organizes and performs work effectively and efficiently.  

9. Maintains and adjusts schedule to enhance program performance.  

10. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with all members of the team.  

11. Maintains and promotes customer satisfaction.  

12. Effectively demonstrates the mission, vision, and values of Lower Cape Fear LifeCare on a daily basis. 

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS 

1. Education: Associates Degree in related field required or equivalent combination of education and experience.  

2. Licensure / Certifications: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) minimum, Resisted Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.  

3. Experience: Minimum of one-year office management experience, preferably in a medical setting.  

4. Essential Technical / Motor Skills: Must be able to read and interpret clinical report/documents. Verbal, written and computer skills necessary to communicate with internal and external customers. Must be literate in English language.  

5. Interpersonal Skills: Strong team membership skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to quickly develop positive interactions with team members, clients and the general public. Highly self-motivated and self-disciplined, flexible and positive attitude.  

6. Essential Physical Requirements: Sitting for desk work and meetings, writing, walking and standing, and climbing stairs.  

7. Essential Mental Abilities: Must be able to read and understand directions, policies, procedures, etc.  

8. Essential Sensory Requirements: Hearing and sight needed for driving. Ability to use sight to perform clerical duties. Ability to use hearing to communicate with staff patients, families, and the general public.  

9. Exposure to Hazards: May encounter exposure to infectious disease or situations which present a potential threat to personal safety.  

10. Other - Hours of Work: Flexible hours are a necessity due to some evening and weekend work. One FTE’s average work week is 40 hours.  

11. Population Served: All populations.
