Lower Columbia College (LCC) is seeking an adjunct Communication Studies Faculty who places students at the center of decision making. We are looking for someone who is innovative and collaborative, values engagement, maintains open and efficient communication, and makes decisions informed by student-success data. The Communication Studies Faculty must maintain an inclusive-classroom culture with respect to the diverse and lived experiences, values, beliefs, and practices of others. This position will use technology to develop and deliver instruction through multiple modalities.

  • Lecture rate is $78.33 per contact hour ($861.63 per credit).
  • Lab rate is $58.33 per contact hour ($1,283.26 per credit).
  • Field-based experience rate is $42.37 per contact hour ($1,398.21 per credit).

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

Among other duties, this Instructor will have the opportunity to :

  • Provide quality instruction that emphasizes an active, student-centered working environment
  • Effectively prepare and present course content to a diverse student population with various learning styles and abilities
  • Collaborate with the department and other members of the campus community to foster student success
  • Incorporate instructional technology in course delivery
  • Contribute to program and college assessment and accreditation activities
  • Collaborate with tutoring services

    Typical Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Master of Arts in Communication Studies, Rhetoric, Speech Communication, Mass Communication, or a related degree from an accredited institution
  • Expressed interest in teaching for a community college
  • Commitment to serve the needs of students who represent a broad spectrum of ages, abilities, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, education, and cultural backgrounds
  • Experience teaching college-level communication studies courses
  • Demonstrated experience teaching with a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Demonstrated ability utilizing technological integration in course design and delivery to maximize student success outcomes
  • Ability to teach a variety of modalities including; face-to-face, hybrid, and online.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of experience teaching college-level communication studies courses
  • Experience with departmental and college-wide writing assessment practices
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with the Performing and Visual Arts Department and externally with a diverse range of individuals across campus to promote student success

    Conditions of Employment

  • If you are hired, you will need to provide proof of identity and documentation of U.S. citizenship or appropriate legal authorization to work for the duration of this position as required by the Immigration Reform Control Act of 1995.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • The College is committed to maintain an environment for teaching and learning which is free of drugs and alcohol.
  • Adjunct faculty must work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible, benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered by the Public Employees Benefits Board. Participation in one of the retirement plans is mandatory. The two plans are the State Board Retirement Plan administered through TIAA-CREF and TRS Plan 3 through the Department of Retirement Systems. Adjuncts who teach at other Washington State Community & Technical colleges and are actively contributing to retirement there may contribute to retirement at LCC.

    Paid Leave

    Adjunct faculty employed on adjunct and / or quarterly contracts shall earn sick leave based on their contracted FTE multiplied by seven (7) for each month they are in active teaching status.

    Adjunct academic employees shall have four (4) days of personal leave available from July 1 through June 30. No more than (2) days may be used per quarter. Adjunct faculty also receive paid jury duty leave.

    On-site Childcare Center

    Theis a state licensed program that offers high quality childcare for children ages 1 month through kindergarten entry to students, staff and faculty. The center is open Monday through Friday 7 : 30 a.m. to 5 : 30 p.m. The program is a participant of the Washington State Early Achievers quality rating and improvement system and rated a level 4-Quality Level of Excellence. Our teachers are trained in the Early Childhood Education field.

    Social Security

    All state employees are covered by the federal and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
