Position Overview and Key Responsibilities
The Lower Eastern Shore Research and Education Center (LESREC) is seeking an Agricultural Technician. Under general supervision the Agricultural Technician will assist the supervisor in the day-to-day operations and maintenance of facility. All aspects of field experiments and research, application of experimental treatments, plot maintenance, small and large plot harvesting, data collection and record keeping, general cropping and facility maintenance. Assist with repairs and maintenance of property and equipment to ensure operational readiness, safety and cleanliness.
ABOUT THE LOWER EASTERN SHORE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER (LESREC-SALISBURY)
The Lower Eastern Shore Research and Education Center (LESREC) is located on Maryland’s Delmarva Peninsula and is comprised of two facilities. The Salisbury Facility has 124 acres and the Poplar Hill Facility consists of 214 acres. The facilities are managed by the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES). The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Departments of Plant Science & Landscape Architecture and Animal and Avian Sciences, University of Maryland Extension (UME), as well as the Entomology Department have active research projects at LESREC. These projects include small grain breeding, field-crop variety trials, crop management, fungicide, insecticide and herbicide efficacy, small fruit and viticulture testing, nutrient and fertility management, soil amendments, nematology, fruit and vegetable screening, organic based farming trials and integrated pest management (IPM).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to work in a harsh environment, excessive heat, cold, dirt and noise. Must be able to tolerate strenuous physical activity in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to lift 50-100 lbs and transport supplies, tools and equipment, climb and perform extensive standing and walking. Ability to wear personal protective equipment.
PREFERENCES (not mandatory)
- Maryland Commercial Class A or B Driver's License (CDL); and / or obtain within six months of employment.
- Maryland Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License - and / or obtain within two years of employment.
- Nutrient Management Voucher Certificate - and / or obtain within eighteen months of employment.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION : High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE : Three years in agricultural work, one year of which was in agricultural research.
OTHER :
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES :
Thorough knowledge of and skill in the use of farm equipment. General knowledge of and ability to use related laboratory equipment. General knowledge of basic mathematics and ability to perform mathematical and algebraic calculations. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to lift and transport agricultural supplies, tools, and equipment, to climb and to perform extensive standing and walking. Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
OTHER :
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
