DUTIES :
Performs routine (journey-level) motor vehicle maintenance and repair work. Work involves repairing or replacing worn or broken parts; performing preventive maintenance activities; and servicing motor vehicle equipment and related gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel engine-powered equipment. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION :
Exchanges, rebuilds, and overhauls motors, transmissions, carburetors, and other motor vehicle components and systems. Must be flexible to work evening and weekend hours as required. Performs vehicle cleaning both interior and exterior. Documents repairs and routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Performs work in emergency situations as required. Coordinates and performs wrecker service to pick-up wrecked or disabled vehicles. Checks and repairs electrical and cooling systems. Performs oil and filter changes, transmission service, brake and suspension repair, tire installation and repair, wheel alignments, air conditioning diagnosis and repair, state vehicle inspections, and other scheduled maintenance. Performs minor engine tune-ups and makes required adjustments on motor vehicles’ motors and engines. Performs motor vehicle body repair work and touch-up painting. Performs safety and emissions inspections. Tests motors and engines for satisfactory performance. Installs after-market accessories and equipment. Maintains records of work performed and parts used. Uses on-board or hand-held electronic diagnostic equipment and other specialized tools and equipment to isolate and adjust malfunctions. Assists in performing inventories of parts and equipment. May tear down inboard and outboard gasoline boat motors or marine diesel engines; inspect, repair, or replace defective parts; and reassemble the motors. May maintain and repair heavy construction equipment. Performs other such related duties as may be assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance, of repair techniques, and of safety practices and principles. Skill in the use of tools and equipment. Ability to follow instructions, to make repairs, and to use tools and equipment. The ability to communicate in English and Spanish is preferred.
REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE :
Requires a certification from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence or ability to obtain within the first year of employment. Texas Motor Vehicle Safety Inspector license and Texas Certified Tow Operator preferred. Requires a valid Texas Commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain within the first year of employment. This position is classified as a safety sensitive position in accordance with FTA’s rules and regulations.
