Duties and Responsibilities

Along with the HSC Ministry team, the Chaplain develops and implements programming in the areas of spirituality, reflection, service, and community partnership. Activities include but are not limited to : 1) Designing and leading public moments of prayer and ritual, retreats, liturgy and worship, ecumenical and interfaith activities; 2) Facilitating reflection-on-experience in small and large groups, including in curricular settings and during service immersion experiences both locally and abroad, and 3) Providing expert pastoral presence and support for students, staff, and faculty in one-on-one and group settings. Additional specific program responsibilities include :

1) Management and development of the Chaplain Mentor Program.

a. Coordinate with the Stritch Department of Medical Education and the LUMC Spiritual Care and Education office to schedule and facilitate 170 students' annual shadowing experience with a hospital Chaplain.

b. Present at monthly orientation sessions and facilitate monthly reflection groups, ensuring learning outcomes are met.

c. Develop program assessment and pursue opportunities for research, publication, and / or other forms of program promotion.

d. Serve as liaison from HSC Ministry to Adjunct Faculty Chaplains.

2) Management and development of the Professional Role Development and Jesuit Values program.

a. Work with key Faculty, Program Directors, and Student Life Staff in HSC schools to introduce and lead reflective practice sessions relevant to students' formation in their chosen career, integrating elements of Ignatian Spirituality and Loyola's Mission.

b. Develop classroom sessions designed for inclusive engagement of diverse student groups that speak to their professional goals and development.

c. Cultivate relationships through active presence and engagement at key School events and gatherings.

3) Leadership or co-leadership role within the HSC Ministry team for community-building programming that includes :

a. Annual Heritage Dinners

b. Annual Interfaith meals

c. Annual new student retreat for medical students

d. Bi-monthly Cura group, which cultivates small group communities exploring spirituality, life, and faith.

4) Facilitation or support role for HSC Ministry programming that includes :

a. Annual Day of Service

b. Ignatian Service Immersion program, including student interviews, formation sessions, reflection opportunities, and accompaniment of student groups to an international or domestic location.

c. Liturgies and prayer services

5) Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and / or Work Experience

Master's Degree in Divinity, Theology, Pastoral Studies, or other related degree, or

equivalent professional experience : 1-2 years of ministry work experience.

Qualifications

Required : Master's Degree in Divinity, Theology, Pastoral Studies, or other related degree, or

equivalent professional experience; 1-2 years of ministry work experience.

Preferred : Master's Degree in Divinity, Theology, Pastoral Studies; 3-5 years of ministry work

experience; advanced training in spiritual direction or accompaniment; conversational Spanish.

  • Is a person of deeply grounded faith nourished by personal and communal spiritual practice(s) who desires serving in a healthcare-related higher education setting.
  • Shares in an understanding of the traditions of the Catholic Church, Ignatian Spirituality, and the charisms of Jesuit Education, as well as other non-Catholic traditions.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills, and relationship-building skills within a diverse community.
  • Displays emotional and spiritual maturity and is able to engage in a ministry of hospitality and pastoral care through accompaniment of Students, Faculty, and Staff of diverse backgrounds and needs.
  • Demonstrates skill, comfort, and sensitivity to religious and cultural diversity, and works to develop anti-racist, multi-faith, and multicultural programming for participants of varying levels of knowledge around and comfort with diverse settings.
  • Demonstrates experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and leads by example in commitment to those who have been historically underrepresented and underserved.
  • Is willing to accompany Students, Faculty, and Staff for one to three weeks per year on service immersion experiences, domestically and / or internationally.
  • Possesses vision and capacity for self-direction in assessing the intersection of community needs and available resources, is detail-oriented, and can carry a project from start to finish.
  • Possesses an ability to make presentations to a variety of constituents, and adjusts presentation style and expectations according to audience.
  • Can manage basic budgets and generate comprehensive and concise program reports.
  • Shares in the mundane and nuanced administrative duties of a program-rich and vibrant office setting in which teamwork is essential.
  • Respects and maintains confidentiality.

Computer Skills

Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Zoom, Internet, and e-mail applications required.

Familiarity with MS SharePoint and Teams, Adobe Suite, Google Suite, Canva, and social media platforms are beneficial.
