Duties and Responsibilities
Summary: The Monograph Cataloging Associate performs copy cataloging for incoming books; manages routine catalog maintenance tasks; resolves catalog problems of all levels of difficulty; handles patron requests for in-process materials; creates, organizes, and participates in cataloging and catalog maintenance projects; participates in collection management functions such as assessing and deaccessioning print books; assists in hiring and training student workers; and manages reports and procedural documents related to the job.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs copy cataloging for incoming print books. This entails searching the library catalog Alma-Primo and OCLC WorldCat database for record copies, applying complex rules and library procedures in record selection and editing, and adhering to the additional steps required by each special group of materials such as books with patron requests and Special Collection items.
  • Participates in print collection management projects to support the library’s goal to rightsize the print book collection. Performs collection assessment pertaining to duplication and physical condition. Assists with sorting and organizing deaccessioned books for pickup by or delivery to Better World Books and other not-for-profit organizations; serves as the backup contact person with those organizations as needed.
  • Sorts, distributes and resolves incoming catalog maintenance requests referred from staff in all libraries. Processes withdrawal and relocation requests. Corrects call numbers, holdings and bibliographic information in Alma-Primo, applying established cataloging rules and procedures. Searches for and exports correct WorldCat records into Alma-Primo for missing and incorrect bibliographic records.
  • Participates in authority control and data cleanup processes. Identifies and resolves unauthorized name, series and subject headings in bibliographic records manually and via batch reports.
  • Verifies, retrieves, and catalogs in-process materials that have been requested by patrons. Communicates with the requestor if the request cannot be filled.
  • Assists in metadata projects for ebooks in collections. Initiates and participates in other departmental projects especially those with the goal to enhance discovery and access of the library’s print book collections.
  • Performs physical processing and catalog maintenance tasks in the absence of student workers. Assists in hiring and training student workers. Documents and maintains procedures pertaining to the job.
  • Participates in committee work, University service, and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Bachelor’s degree and two to three years of experience required.

Qualifications
  • Ability to work with highly detailed information in an online environment.
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a collaborative team environment.

Certificates/Credentials/Licenses
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Two years of library experience required, preferably in relevant areas.

Computer Skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Internet and e-mail applications.
  • Previous experience with library management and discovery system (such as Alma and Primo) is preferred.
