What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pilot Car Driver (Escort) position at LPX Group?
Purpose
The Pilot Car Driver is responsible for escorting oversized vehicles to ensure safe travel on public roads to and from the jobsites. The role requires a high level of responsibility and attention to detail, as well as excellent communication and driving skills.
Job Responsibilities
- The driver must ensure that the escort vehicle is clean and equipped with all the necessary safety equipment such as warning signs, flags, and flashing lights.
- Must guide and assist the lowboy drivers and alert them when other drivers are approaching the vehicle.
- Must maintain contact with the driver of the oversized vehicle to coordinate movements and to warn of any traffic conditions or obstacles to ensure safe travel.
- Conducting route surveys: The pilot car driver may be sent out to conduct a thorough survey of the route or jobsite before the trip to identify any obstacles or hazards that could affect the lowboy drivers movement.
- Managing traffic: must manage traffic along routes
- Responsible for signaling to other drivers when it is safe to pass or when they need to slow down.
- Must report incidents and accidents. Any incidents or accidents that occur during movement must be reported immediately.
Skills and Qualifications
- A valid drivers license and a clean driving record.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Must pass drug screen and criminal background check.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and DOT regulations.
- Ability to read and understand oversize permits, routes, and regulations.
- One-to-three years experience in transportation industry preferred.
- Willingness to work flexible hours in various climate and ground conditions.
- Physical exertion including standing, walking, climbing, lifting up to 50lbs, twisting, turning, bending, and leading in all directions.
