Job Purpose:
The Aerial Lineman I responsible for the install, maintenance, and repair of aerial fiber optic cables, including pole transfers, new builds, overlash, and strand construction while ensuring all work is completed safely and efficiently. This role requires experience in aerial construction, the ability to climb poles and operate bucket trucks, and a commitment to following industry safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Use hand and power tools to measure, cut, bend, assemble, and erect components as per applicable plans and industry standards.
- Install, maintain, and repair aerial fiber optic cables, including pole transfers, new builds, overlash, and strand construction.
- Repair and maintain fiber systems, addressing issues such as broken lashing, sagging aerial strand, pole transfers, and grounding functions in compliance with NESC and NEC codes.
- Use ladders, and pole-climbing gear safely and efficiently.
- Operate power equipment such as compressors, forklifts, and hydraulic bucket lifts.
- Maintains accurate records and documentation for construction activities.
- Operate company vehicles and bucket trucks in a safe and responsible manner.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols by setting up safe work areas with cones, signs, and barriers.
- Read and interpret fiber construction plans and work orders.
- Pull and place fiber, coaxial, and strand cables using standard aerial construction equipment.
- Respond to emergency calls as part of an on-call rotation, restoring services in a timely manner.
- Deploy and remove traffic control devices to protect work areas on streets or roadways.
- Participate in and support safety policies, processes, and programs.
- Maintain clean and hazard-free work site prior to project initiation and Identify and report safety hazards, field conditions, and accidents immediately.
- Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (i.e., back-up alarms, smell of smoke or fumes, different colored warning tag, warning sirens.
- Ensure accuracy in work orders and adherence to standards for safety and efficiency.
- Procure tools and materials efficiently and ensure proper maintenance of equipment.
- Collaborate with crew members and foremen to complete projects on schedule while meeting quality standards.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Pre-apprenticeship program or lineman school preferred
Experience:
- 2-5 years experience working as a Lineman preferred
- Experience working with hand and power tools commonly used in line construction.
- Experience working aloft, including climbing poles and operating aerial lifts. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of aerial cable installation and industry standards.
- Basic knowledge of telecom OSP craft.
- Proficient in NESC requirements.
- Ability to read make-ready drawings, cable designs, and construction prints.
- Capable of operating hand and power tools for aerial telecom cable installation.
- Basic proficiency in Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Understanding of mathematical concepts for measurements and calculations.
- Knowledgeable of OSHA and safety regulations.
- Works safely with or without supervision.
- Follows instructions accurately to complete tasks efficiently.
- Identifies and reports safety hazards.
- Understands traffic control procedures and guidelines.
- Ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to operate company vehicles (bucket truck) and hydraulic aerial lifts.
- Can work outdoors in various weather conditions, day or night.
- Performs well under pressure and meets deadlines.
- Communicates effectively, both written and verbal.
