Description
The Clinical Associate of Surgical Skills is responsible for providing cadaveric needs for the basic anatomy and postgraduate education courses. Prepares specimens including harvesting, freezing, thawing, washing, and wrapping for appropriate preservation and utilization for course use.
Essential Position Functions & Duties
95% Essential Functions:
- Works with the Surgical Skills Lab executive director to evaluate cadaveric needs for basic anatomy and postgraduate education courses.
- Obtains serum samples from cadavers and sends samples to the laboratory for testing for HIV, Hepatitis A, B, and C. Prepares cadaver specimens including harvesting specimens, freezing, thawing, washing, and wrapping for appropriate preservation and utilization for course use.
- Monitors cadaver specimens stored in SSL freezers. Carries out the proper set up, clean up and disposal of cadaver specimens used for laboratory sessions.
- Ensure materials are ready and available as needed for each class.
- Supervises and maintains the cleanliness and safety of the SSL, surrounding lab related areas, and preparation room.
- Sets up and empties trash receptacles, properly disposes of biohazard boxes and sharps containers.
- Ensures proper safety equipment and PPEs are present in the lab and are in good working order.
- Prepares lab and surrounding areas for guided lab tours.
- Helps schedule, set up, demonstrate, and proctor team-training sessions while coordinating with Lab Director and faculty to ensure faculty, students, residents, and other healthcare related professions receive the most ‘real life’ simulated educational experience.
- Maintains Team Training Area, high fidelity mannequins, networking functions, and monitors supplies used within simulated scenarios.
5% Marginal Functions:
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director for the Surgical Skills Laboratory.
***Requires lifting: Incumbent must be able to lift and transport 70-100 pounds of cadaveric specimens with appropriate training and use of proper body mechanics. Must be able to work in confined spaces including bending, crouching, or turning as required by job duties.
Qualifications
The applicant must meet one of the following:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Biological Sciences with one year of professional experience in a healthcare setting.
- Associate degree in Biological Sciences from an accredited university with 3 years of professional experience in a healthcare setting.
- High school diploma with at least 10-15 years of professional experience in a healthcare setting.
- Must be able to lift 70-100 pounds as incumbent will be working with human cadavers and /or human parts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expert in Microsoft Office.
- Experience with performing blood draws.
