Introduction

We are looking for an experienced and dedicated Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Technician (COT) who is passionate about providing top-notch patient care. As the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Technician, you will assist in providing comprehensive eye care services to our patients. You will be responsible for conducting diagnostic tests, taking patient histories, and providing technical assistance in the treatment of ophthalmic and vision disorders. You should be knowledgeable in ophthalmic terminology, anatomy, and physiology, as well as have excellent customer service skills. We are looking for an individual who is self-motivated and organized and can work well independently and as a part of a team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform administrative duties, such as patient recordkeeping and scheduling appointments.
  • Make introductions and establish rapport with patients. Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.
  • Assist ophthalmologists in treating eye disorders
  • Perform pre-exam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, assess extra ocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, pupillary dilation, and all other patient services as requested by the physician including specialty tests such as color vision screening, dry eye testing, and refractions.
  • Identify and document ocular abnormalities during patient exams
  • Perform technical ophthalmologic duties including examining and special testing patients in various ophthalmic sub-specialty clinics
  • Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, Optos, A/B scans, and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT), Optical Biometry (Lenstar).
  • Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physician.
  • Record patient medical history and document test results
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Clean and sterilize ophthalmic instruments
  • Stock and maintain supplies in ophthalmic examination rooms
  • Follow safety guidelines when working with diagnostic machines and lasers
Requirements:

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ophthalmic Certification from recognized source or program, any college level experience is a plus
  • Certified as an Ophthalmic assistant (COA) or technician (COT) preferred.

  • Knowledge of ophthalmology and basic anatomy
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the eye
  • Ability to use medical instruments and equipment
  • Knowledge of Refractions for eyeglasses
  • Knowledge of ocular disease and treatment
  • Ability to perform routine eye examinations
  • Ability to operate and interpret diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to enter patient data accurately into electronic medical records
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, employees, and medical staff
  • Ability to explain procedures and answer patient questions
  • Great organizational and time management skills
  • Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
  • Basic Microsoft office knowledge such as word, excel, outlook, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and/or correspondence
