Primary Function: Performs general repair and maintains grounds and buildings.
Major Duties
- Care for lawns including mowing, edging, trimming, cleaning, raking, and fertilizing.
- Care for trees and shrubs including trimming, watering, and pruning.
- Care for flowerbeds includes planting, watering, pruning, pulling weeds, and adding chemicals.
- Pick up and transport refuse, brush, and other unwanted material.
- Clean parking lots including filling potholes and levelling of sidewalks/walkways.
- Perform cleaning and repairing of grounds keeping equipment.
- Operate various equipment such as mower, tractor, string trimmer, edger, blower, chain saw, hacksaw, drill press, and digger, etc.
- Assist in mixing cement for repair and construction of sidewalks.
- Respond to emergencies during evening, nighttime, and weekend hours.
- Any other duties as assigned by Grounds Supervisor or Facilities Director
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to help students, faculty, and staff in a professional manner.
- Strong ability to multitask and problem solve.
- Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment.
- The ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality is essential.
- Some knowledge of planting and care of trees, shrubbery, and grass
- Strong ability to operate hand tools and equipment such as lawn mower, string trimmer, edger, shovel, etc.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Must have a current and valid Texas Driver's License and have the ability to drive.
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Previous experience in grounds maintenance preferred.
Physical Requirements
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee will be required to do the following:
- Must be ambulatory around campus and in buildings.
- Required to regularly sit and stand.
- Frequently use wrist, hands and/or fingers to make small repetitive movements such as typing, distributing mail, and picking up small objects
- Ability to talk frequently to convey detailed and/or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Be able to hear average or normal conversations and receive verbal information.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
- Ability to crouch, kneel, bend, or stand for long periods.
- Required to lift packages and/or move heavy objects, 50 lbs.
