Primary Function: Protecting the University’s computing environments by monitoring threats, identifying vulnerabilities, implementing security measures, responding to incidents, and educating employees on best practices.
Major Duties:
- Collaborating with the VPTA and other IT functional area leads to ensure integrity and availability of IT related systems and data
- Monitoring on-premises and cloud-based network traffic and system activities to detect and respond to security threats
- Identifying vulnerabilities by conducting regular assessments in conjunction with LCU staff and 3rd party support to identify and address security weaknesses in systems and applications
- Implementing security measures by working with the VPTA and IT staff to update, apply, and test technical policies, procedures, and controls to protect data and systems
- Investigating and responding to security breaches, mitigating damage, and preventing future incidents
- Performing regular internal security audits, as well as collaborating with external auditors, to ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations
- Deploying annual and remedial cybersecurity training campaigns, as well as monthly phish test campaigns to educate LCU constituents on best practices and how to recognize potential threats
- Analyzing and managing security risks to minimize potential impacts
- Installing, configuring, and maintaining security tools
- Collaboration with other IT and business teams to ensure security measures align with institutional goals
- Keeping up to date with the latest security trends, threats, and technologies to continuously improve the institution’s security posture
Job Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of the general principles and practices pertaining to technological applications in a higher education setting and specifically the LCU community.
- Knowledge of the principles, standards, requirements, and best practices of accrediting bodies
- Knowledge of university policies pertaining to data and electronic communication
- Knowledge of the general principles and practices of leading and interacting with people
- Knowledge of the general principles and practices of participating in strategic planning
- Knowledge of the general principles and practices of compliance issues related to budgeting and resource allocation.
- Knowledge of the key principles of cybersecurity and their implementation and assessment
- Skill in utilizing appropriate electronic and other technological applications.
- Skill in decision-making, problem solving, and establishing priorities.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships and processes.
- Skill in resource management and allocation
- Skill in the installation and maintenance of security tools such as firewalls, antivirus software, and intrusion detection systems
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, information technology, cybersecurity, or related field.
- Certifications, i.e. CompTIA Security , CISSP, and/or Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
- 2-3 years' experience in IT Security, Network Administration, or related roles, proficiency in traditional network security methods and modern XDR utilization preferred
- First-hand experience in the Microsoft 365 and Azure environments, especially Intune, Entra ID, and Azure, preferred
Physical Requirements:
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee will be required to do the following.
- Be ambulatory around campus and in buildings.
- Required to regularly sit and stand.
- Frequently use wrist, hands and/or fingers to make small repetitive movements such as typing, distributing mail, and picking up small objects
- Ability to talk frequently to convey detailed and/or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Be able to hear average or normal conversations and receive verbal information.
- Required to lift packages and/or other objects up to 50 pounds.
NOTE: All LCU employees are required to complete Title IX & Information Security (FERPA) training and Data Security Training at the time of new hire and on an annual basis thereafter.
All LCU Technology employees are subject to CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) training and monitoring. Fingerprinting and criminal background checks are included in this process.
