Summary
SUMMARY: Responsible for maintaining the premises of county facilities and commercial/institutional buildings in clean and orderly condition with 9 full-time personnel. Required to practice equipment and supplies control; procure and maintain adequate stocks of equipment and supplies; use and report serviceability problems with department equipment; and support the department’s general technicians. Ensure workers are adequately trained to support all assigned duties.
Essential Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assist Custodial Supervisor in assigning employees weekly and daily work schedule and duties.
- Inspect all custodians’ work prior to closing the buildings.
- Oversee weekend work of employees’ time and quality of work for stripping and refinishing hard floors and shampooing floors in various buildings.
- Perform and/or supervise janitorial maintenance in other precinct buildings i.e.: Juvenile Justice Center, Precinct Community Centers, Slaton Tax Office, etc.
- Transport small equipment or tools between departments and/or buildings.
- Assist night security in securing all county buildings; secure all buildings in absence of night security.
- Ensure security of all janitorial equipment and supplies.
- Ensure proper paperwork is completed for documentation of employee hours and work orders.
- Properly store and identify all cleaning chemicals.
- Inventories warehouse/storage areas to determine availability of supplies.
- Operate vehicles including pickups and forklifts.
- Assess maintenance department needs and requisition equipment and materials for cleaning, as well as supplies in need of restocking or tools/machines in need of replacing.
- Follow all applicable fiscal county policies concerning: attendance; documentation of work; dress and personal appearance; hazard and alarms; confidentiality; licensing and regulation.
- Respond to 24hr. emergency maintenance call back system and provide after hours overtime work as needed.
- Complete other duties as may be assigned.
- Trains new personnel in proper procedures and techniques for:
- Cleaning and polishing lighting fixtures, marble surfaces, trim rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, rest rooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, locker rooms, and other work areas.
- Sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors, rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies.
- Washing walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, panels, and sills.
- Empty and clean ash receptacles and wastebaskets. Transport trash and waste to disposal area.
- Refill, repair, and replace toilet paper, paper towel, soap, and feminine hygiene dispensers.
Position Requirements
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise full time janitorial staff, work release and community service personnel. Assigns and reviews work, makes personnel and performance review recommendations.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High school graduation or its equivalent plus at least ten years of experience with some supervisory capacity which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties listed above. Valid Texas Driver’s License.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand for extended periods of time; use hands to finger motion, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently bend, stop, squat, lie down, and walk. The employee may be required to work in some extremely small chases and attic crawl spaces. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds, such as tools and equipment, and must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, ability to focus, and perceive color. Vision may be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Tolerate extreme cold and hot weather conditions. Employee will be required to work in confinement areas, office buildings, and warehouses with standard incandescent and florescent lighting, to handle and properly dispose of hazardous chemicals, and work in areas of loud noise.
