Juvenile Supervision Officer

The Juvenile Supervision Officer will report to the STAR Program Coordinator and the Probation Unit Supervisor.  The Juvenile Supervision Officer is responsible for directing youth who are placed in the Specialized Treatment and Rehabilitation Program (STAR) and the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP).

• Supervise program participants in exercise activities appropriate for their age and maturity level.
• Supervise all exercises that STAR/JJAEP participants are instructed to perform. 
• Complete and submit accurate and timely reports and documentation to the STAR Program Coordinator, including attendance forms, daily activity sheets, incident reports, disciplinary reports, academic performance forms etc.
• Model behavior expected of program participants. 
• Supervise program participants during community service programs.
• Supervise program participants for duration of STAR/JJAEP program. 
• Monitor participant's health needs and communicate problems to STAR Program Coordinator.  Submit health profiles when necessary.
• Pat search participants as required in accordance with departmental search policy. 
• Restrain participants who are out of control and may be a danger to themselves or others or school property.
• Provide transportation of participants to and from program activities when necessary. 
• Transport participants to detention facilities in conjunction with Probation Officer and with prior approval from the STAR Program Coordinator.
• Conduct periodic classroom checks and security when assigned to Project Intercept II & JJAEP. 
• Escort children to and from the office when assigned to Project Intercept II & JJAEP.
• Provide counseling and minor interventions to students in the STAR Program and JJAEP. 
• Conduct Campus Tours to all LISD Campuses as directed by Star Program Coordinator.
• Conduct home visits on all STAR IV participants as directed by STAR Program Coordinator. 
• Accept assignment of staff members, interns and volunteers.
• Train assigned staff members, interns and volunteers according to departmental policies and procedures.
• Arrive for work in a timely manner, and contact unit supervisor prior to arriving late for work.  Advise supervisor at earliest time possible if unable to work (preferably 6 hours in advance).
•  Dress and groom professionally and in accordance with departmental dress code when representing the Lubbock County Juvenile Justice Center.
•  Submit leave requests in accordance with departmental policy for any leave time requested, including flex schedules (preferably 30 days in advance).
•  Clock in and out online in the county timekeeping system KRONOS or use your badge at the timestamp location in Control. If you have changes/corrections to your time during the 2 week pay period, please submit them no later than the last Friday of the pay period to JJAEP Coordinator as per departmental policy.
•  Respond to departmental deadlines when issued.

• Respond to all emergency situations, including medical, fire, tornado, escapes, fights and bomb threats in accordance with departmental policies.
• Maintain hazard free work station. 

• Exercise caution in any potentially dangerous or hazardous situation.
• Store all supplies, tools and equipment in secure areas according to departmental policies. 
• Perform other duties as they are assigned.

• Meet NCIC/TCIC employment guidelines.
• Be of good moral character. 
• Be emotionally suited for working with children. 
• Have acquired a high school diploma or GED. 
• Meet all the requirements of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department for certification. 
• Maintain TJJD certification after first being certified.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Texas Family Code Title III; Texas Penal Code; Texas Juvenile Probation Standards; and Standards for Juvenile Justice Alternative Program.
 
ABILITY TO:
Perform all regimented physical exercise that program participants are expected to perform; Utilize personal computer; Work independently and efficiently; Make informed decisions; Perform public speaking; and effectively communicate in writing and orally.
 
REQUIRED TO HAVE:

• A physical examination.  Must pass the exam.
• Telephone.
• Valid Texas Driver’s license.
• An automobile.
• Liability insurance on the vehicle used for work purposes.

 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This job requires some light lifting (less than 50 lbs), running, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, and the ability to perform physical fitness exercises.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND HOURS:
Work space is located in Project Intercept Unit II which is a non-smoking building. 
 
Work week will be flexible hours within a forty (40) hour time period.  The work week begins on Saturday and concludes on the following Friday.   Overtime will be compensated at either time and one half or time for time; depending upon the hours worked per week.
