Title: Aquatics Director

Hours: Full-Time, Exempt

Department: Aquatics

Salary: $44,000 - $47,000

Essential Functions

Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Aquatics Director is responsible for overseeing the delivery and execution of a broad range of Aquatic Programs to include but not limited to the following: Group and Private Swim Instruction, Swim Team, Lifeguard Training Classes, Adult Classes, and Group Rentals. Plans, develops implements, and supervises programs and staff, and performs related administrative duties. The Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for maintaining safe environments for staff and members, maintaining staff schedules, pool maintenance and reporting. The role will be split roughly 50/50 between planning and/or administrative work and providing direct service to our members and patrons using the pool.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare Members for Success

  • Plan and oversee the administration of designated Aquatic programs and activities that support youth, adult and family development outcomes:
  • Establish Aquatic program objectives consistent with organizational goals and mission.
  • Oversee the provision of day-to-day program activities in accordance with established standards and goals.
  • Ensure that members are encouraged to participate in a variety of program areas/activities and receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop skills in program area(s).
  • Demonstrate leadership to assure conduct, safety and development of members.
  • Directly instruct program activities and classes.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the pool and locker rooms.
  • Maintain customer service greeting all members and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.

Program Development and Implementation

  • Establish and maintain aquatic program goals and settings that insure the health and safety of members. Ensure that aquatic staff understand and effectively communicate standards of program; that they ensure program areas are safe, well-ventilated and well lit; and that aquatic equipment is maintained in good working condition.
  • Ensure the evaluation of aquatic programs on a continual basis and ensures program/activities respond to member needs and address their gender and cultural diversity.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of the Aquatic Department’s annual budget, ensuring that programs and activities are operated within established budgetary guidelines.
  • Develop programs, activities, and/or events to maximize the pool usage and grow member participation.
  • Supervision
  • Allocate, monitor and manage Aquatic staff and volunteers, ensuring productive and effective performance.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and regular appraisal.
  • Oversee proper record keeping and reporting including activities and events conducted and maintenance logs.

Service

  • Responsible for executing planned programs for members and youth when not covered by employees of the Aquatics Department.
  • May have to directly lead aquatic fitness classes, cover Lifeguarding shifts and teach swim lessons.
  • The Aquatics Coordinator should expect that roughly 50% of their time will be spent on direct service activities.

Marketing and Public Relations

  • Increase visibility of aquatic programs via posting of daily schedule, announcement of upcoming events and the dissemination of timely information for the development of advertising and promotion through mailings, fliers and media releases.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
  • May oversee special programs and/or events (i.e. Swimming with Santa, Floating Pumpkin Patch), and/or participate in the implementation of other Club activities as necessary.
  • May be required to conduct and participate in various organizational fund-raisers.
  • May be required to assist in program areas outside of normal responsibilities.
  • Relationships:
  • Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with club staff (professional and part-time), club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and advise/counsel.
  • External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member and other to assist in resolving problems.

Requirements

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Experience: Four-year degree in related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience. A minimum of two years’ work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization. CPR/AED and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer Certification Lifeguard required upon hire, CPR/AED; First Aid Instructor Certification; WSI (Water Safety Instructor Certification); CPO (Certified Pool Operator Certification) or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire. Supervisory and Management experience.

Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the general philosophy of Aquatics and Recreation and its application; facility operations management; safety and emergency first-aid procedures; customer service principles; establishing and maintaining healthy pool water; pump and filtration operations and chemical feeding equipment.
  • Knowledge of the planning and organization of aquatics instruction and water safety programs.
  • Knowledge of budget planning and management.
  • Skills in swimming, lifeguarding and lifesaving procedures and instruction and water safety programs.
  • Skills in recruiting, training, supervising, evaluating, motivating employees.
  • The ability to successfully establish and maintain safe and fun pool environments.
  • Ability to resolve customer complaints and escalated problems.
  • Ability to safely extricate people from a pool who vary in weight, with or without assistance, at any time.
  • Ability to react effectively to all potential mental, physical, and stressful situations inherent to the duties of a First Responder; hear noises either naturally or with electronic auditory assistance equivalent to that of normal conversation up to 30 meters away.
  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors and interact with employees and vendors in a professional manner.
  • Honesty, integrity and operating as a team player are critical to this organization.
  • Exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Report to scheduled shift consistently and on time.
  • Follow policies, procedures and rules of the organization.
  • Maintain high program standards.

Working Conditions

Flexibility to working schedules may be required due to changing business demands. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and at times can become noisy during peak times of pool use. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and humid conditions and extreme temperature variations. The employee is also exposed to pool chemicals and back-room operations of the pool.
