JOB DESCRIPTION :
To facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing, fellow peers and school district personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Education / Certification :
High school diploma or GED
Valid Texas educational aide certificate (Must obtain within 30 days of employment)
Certificate in Interpreting level I, II or Basic issued by either the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services : Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services or a Certificate of Interpretation, Transliteration or National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Generalist issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf preferred
EXPERIENCE :
Experience working with children
Experience interpreting in an educational setting preferred
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES :
Demonstrate professionalism in all ethical areas, especially in applying the National Association of the Deaf – Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NAD-RID) Code of Professional Conduct to the educational setting.
Well-versed in course material in order to demonstrate competency in the interpreting / or transliterating process.
Interpret / transliterate according to the student’s specifications of the Individual Education Program (IEP).
Interpret / transliterate as much classroom interaction as to not to adversely impact student learning.
Maintain attention on the student throughout the class period.
Communicate with appropriate personnel on the educational team regarding student progress.
Communicate the role of the interpreter with district personnel.
Maintain the IEP specified role in the general education settings.
Maintain confidentiality regarding students with anyone other than the educational team.
Assist with in class support in either the self contained deaf education setting or the mainstream setting.
Participate in continuing professional growth as required by the certification governing body.
Regular attendance.
Demonstrate flexibility when role shifts occur.
Ability to interpret in the following environments.Educational Settings (Preschool and K through 12) Registration, Classroom Extracurricular Activities (Primarily Voice-to-Sign) All Sports- football, soccer, golf, track, baseball, tennis, volleyball, cross-country, basketball, swimming, dance, cheer Support Services – Parent / Teacher Conference, Orientation, Tutoring, Life / Work Skills, Principal’s office, In School Suspension, Reassignment School Nurse’s office Field trips Electives, etc.
Participate in faculty meeting, and special events assigned.
