Lab & Production Technician, Physiology at Lumen Bioscience

Lumen Bioscience is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician/Production Assistant to join our Physiology team, supporting the production of our innovative spirulina-based platform. This role involves hands-on laboratory work, operation of bioreactors and processing equipment, and meticulous record-keeping. Role Description:

  • Culture and Bioreactor Operations: Cultivate spirulina in laboratory flasks, set up and operate large-scale bioreactors (1L–2000L), manage upstream and downstream processing units such as mixers, pumps, and valves, and perform quality assays.
  • Laboratory Techniques & Data Management: Adhere strictly to existing protocols while assisting in developing new protocols, maintaining detailed electronic laboratory notebooks, and troubleshooting equipment or process deviations.
  • Laboratory Operations & Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitized workspace, dedicate approximately 10% of your time to general lab upkeep and compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), and consistently adhere to lab safety standards.
  • Communication & Team Collaboration: Collaborate closely with production and research scientists, proactively communicate updates, report process deviations, and actively learn new laboratory techniques and instruments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Set up, operate, and monitor large-scale bioreactors for spirulina production.
  • Prepare media and configure bioreactor control systems.
  • Operate processing equipment, including mixers, pumps, hoses, and valves.
  • Perform product assays to ensure adherence to quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and organized electronic records of all procedures.
  • Dedicate time to general lab maintenance, sanitation, and compliance tasks.
  • Promptly report and troubleshoot any process or equipment deviations.
  • Actively participate in team communications and contribute to cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education & Experience:
    • Prior experience in a production or laboratory environment, preferably involving clean operations.
    • Background or interest in biology, scientific disciplines, or food production.
    • Experience operating lab or processing equipment is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
    • Mechanical aptitude with experience in handling hoses, pumps, air lines, and tri-clamps.
    • Proactive and capable of thriving independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
    • Strong integrity, commitment to quality, and timely task execution.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods (2 hours).
  • Occasionally lift or carry items weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Manipulate hoses, air lines, and sanitary tri-clamps, including overhead tasks.
  • Safely use step stools and ladders in accordance with workplace safety protocols.
  • Perform delicate manual procedures regularly in the laboratory.
