Job Summary:
The Director of Construction will be responsible to translate the company’s strategic growth plans into an actionable and defined operational plan.
The Director of Construction (DOC) will lead and drive the profitable execution and efficiency of regional construction activities and overall business results. The DOC will champion the internal and external working relationships for all functional areas on key components of projects, including project and product development, project execution, process improvement, efficiency, profitability, and other critical items for the Company.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Provide daily leadership and guidance to the Construction Project Managers, Coordinators, and Estimators
- Support and intercede with team members when appropriate
- Participate in the hiring and training of team members.
- Manages and oversees performance related actions for employees as needed and in accordance with company policy.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Accountable for safety outcomes of all Construction Project team members. Monitors and addresses gaps in safety action compliance and a safe jobsite.
- Accountable for financial success of all Construction execution efforts and for all Construction execution processes including but not limited to project estimation, Bid accuracy and timeliness, and Gross Margin achievement
- Ensure proactive cost management strategies and continual communication with leadership regarding cost risks and opportunities.
- Works closely with the Business Development organization in developing both short- and long-term objectives to drive business opportunities and expansion of product offerings.
- Oversees and guide all Estimating, pre-Bid, and pre-Construction activities to maximize profitability, competitiveness, and accuracy in accordance with established process and procedure and regulatory requirements.
- Review contracts and collaborate with team mates to negotiate contract terms and to mitigate risks.
- Responsible for supervising, managing, inspiring and leading a mix of direct and matrixed in a way that is consistent with the Company’s culture and values.
- Complete quarterly performance reviews for direct reports Construction staff planning & budgeting, Employee hiring, onboarding & firing
- Responsible for applying effective leadership techniques to the planning, design & construction phases of projects from inception to completion for the purpose of controlling cost, time & quality.
- Oversees the end-to-end operations of construction from the plans/permits handoff to final CO on all company projects.
- Provides input to the development and implementation of policies and procedures that will improve day-to-day Construction operations
- Review and report on project schedules to maintain project success and drive timely collections.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of practices, theories, and policies involved in business and finance.
- Prior business development experience as a leader within a high growth organization
- Mindset of “safety first” with a firm grasp on programs/policy that drive success in this area
- Proven track record of identifying and developing talent
- Exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others and works to maintain constructive working relationships
- Excellent time management, decision making, human relations, presentation, and organization skills.
- Strong working knowledge and experience with business software and systems to include Microsoft Office Suite, ERP/MRP systems, quoting/estimating systems, and planning software.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or construction and 5 or more years related construction experience overseeing transportation related projects or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong knowledge of the Construction industry including construction contracts, material, equipment, project scheduling and oversight, and financial acumen required.
- Knowledge of the Traffic Control and Traffic Signal construction process highly desirable.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
