Job Summary
The Controller in a cannabis facility is responsible for overseeing all financial activities, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and managing financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls. This role is crucial for maintaining financial integrity, optimizing profitability, and ensuring transparency in financial operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting
· Oversee all financial activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger accounting.
· Prepare and analyze financial statements, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
· Ensure timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closings.
· Develop and implement internal financial controls to safeguard assets and mitigate risks.
· Maintain and improve financial processes, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in reporting.
· Ensure compliance with state, local, and federal cannabis regulations, including tax reporting
· Work closely with external auditors, tax professionals, and regulatory bodies to ensure financial transparency.
· Monitor changes in cannabis financial regulations and adjust policies and reporting accordingly.
· Develop and manage budgets, financial forecasts, and cost analyses to support strategic decision-making.
· Monitor cash flow and financial performance, providing recommendations for cost savings and revenue growth.
· Collaborate with leadership to develop financial models for expansion, capital investments, and operational improvements.
· Implement financial systems tailored to the cannabis industry.
· Establish inventory controls to prevent discrepancies and ensure accurate cost accounting.
· Work closely with operations and sales teams to provide financial insights and optimize profitability.
· Evaluate vendor contracts, pricing, and payment terms to maximize cost-effectiveness.
· Supervise and mentor accounting and finance team members, ensuring adherence to best practices.
· Act as a financial advisor to senior management, offering insights for business growth and risk management.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred).
· 5 years of experience in financial management, preferably in the cannabis, manufacturing, or retail industry
· Strong knowledge of GAAP, tax laws, and regulatory requirements
· Experience with financial software e.g., QuickBooks Online preferred
· Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
· Experience working in a high-regulation industry is a plus
Skills:
· Full-time position, typically in an office within the cannabis facility.
· Some travel may be required for audits, vendor meetings, or compliance reviews.
· Must pass background checks and comply with state cannabis regulations.
