TITLE
Department Chair/Content Area Specialist Position (8) (.8 FTE teaching / .2 FTE department chair responsibilities)
GENERAL
The eight departments include: English; World Language; Guidance; Mathematics; Science, Social Studies; Special Services; and Unified Arts. Department Chairs will work under the direction of the building principal. Department Chairs will meet prior to the start of the school year for a total of 6 hours; weekly (during the school day) with the building principal; and monthly (after school) with the building principal. Participation in Advisory is voluntary and has no bearing on the department head selection process.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• To improve student performance at all levels.
• To model instructional excellence through the use of best practices, curriculum design and the use of data.
• To provide leadership for instruction, curriculum and assessment.
• To coordinate the development/review of core assignments and common assessments across all departments.
• To facilitate the updating and reviewing of all curriculum maps.
• To work within the department and with special needs personnel and support staff to improve student performance for ALL students.
• To collect, analyze and use data and student work to improve instruction and programming.
• To mentor/peer coach teachers to expand content knowledge, instructional practices and academic, social and emotional needs of adolescents.
• To conduct regular monthly department meetings.
• To develop a department budget.
• To assist in the recruitment, screening, training, and assigning of department personnel.
• To assist in the formation of departmental schedules and the master schedule. To assist in successful transition of new students.
• To oversee common planning time and the use of special educators in the department.
• To work with the principal on reviewing and revising LHS graduation requirements
• To develop Smart Goals that are relevant to your role as department chair.
• In collaboration with members of your department, develop a common Smart Goal that applies to the department as a whole.
• Additional responsibilities that are department specific will be provided during interview process
