Director of Development

The Lussier Community Education Center (LCEC) is a grassroots community center with a history of strong programs, broad partnerships, and grassroots community organizing. Located on the grounds of Ezekiel Gillespie Middle School and Memorial High School, the LCEC has a mission of building community, creating opportunities, and enriching education.

As a member of the leadership team, the Director of Development will lead the overall fund development efforts for the LCEC, building fund development capacity through a diverse array of strategies in support of a $1.5 million operating budget. This person will lead the Center with marketing, communications and development tasks. The Director of Development will work closely with the Executive Director to plan and implement the Center’s fund development efforts. The ideal candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, understand the importance of relationships and be willing to reach into the community to build and broaden relationships. They must also be highly organized, creative, flexible, and have experiential knowledge of fund development in nonprofits. A history of working in a diverse setting is also desirable. This full-time position reports to the Executive Director.

Hours: Full time, exempt, onsite. The hours worked are generally Mondays - Fridays, 9am-5pm. Occasional evenings and/or weekends for special events.

Compensation: $65,000/year plus employer-sponsored health insurance, dental insurance, life & short/long term disability insurance, 403(b), flexible spending account for healthcare purchases, and a generous vacation, sick leave, and personal days package.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build the fund development capacity of the LCEC by developing, updating & evaluating the annual LCEC Fund Development Plan & lead its execution.
  • Identify & pursue funding opportunities with foundations, local, state, federal government & other revenue generation sources by engaging in all aspects of fund development.
  • Manage individual donor support through individual approaches, direct mail & other methods by maintaining or creating personalized donor/funder communications of the organization’s work.
  • Work with the Executive Director & staff to build relationships with potential major donors to oversee the management of the Center’s donor database.
  • Maintain & expand the base of local businesses, service groups, and faith communities supporting LCEC programs.
  • Organize events to support fund development goals, including fundraisers alongside staff and volunteers with in-person events.
  • Explore opportunities for planned giving, earned income and other revenue generation sources.
  • Monitor & communicate progress toward the annual fundraising goal to the Executive Director & Board of Directors.
  • Develop the communications strategy for the Center including training of staff to participate in development activities, including fundraising & public speaking.
  • Create an annual report & any other marketing materials including brochures & information about special campaigns or initiatives.
  • Develop, maintain & execute systems needed to support successful fund development including master fund development calendar with all events, application & report deadlines.
  • Process and acknowledge donations: log checks, prepare deposits, generate tax receipts, coordinate thanks from staff, board members, volunteers & program participants.
  • Write timely, accurate, and effective grant proposals and reports.
  • Develop & publish content for Center website, newsletters and social media.
  • Supervise the Communications & Development Coordinator.
  • Participate fully in the shared work of the LCEC, community events, staff meetings/trainings, and other duties.
  • The Director of Development will perform all other duties and/or tasks at the discretion of the Executive Director as necessary for the successful operation of the Center.

PREFERRED SKILLS, TRAITS & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate degree in communications, marketing, or related field preferred.
  • Strong verbal, written and communication skills.
  • Experience working well independently, collaborating & taking direction.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in non-profit fundraising, including donor relations, grant writing and reporting is required.
  • Relevant experience with increasing leadership responsibility & effective staff management in non-profit development desired.
  • Experience with annual campaign planning, implementation, digital and print communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to write strategic communications pieces for an organization, including press releases, newsletters, website content, etc.
  • High level of proficiency with the Google Suite.
  • Proven ability to engage with & develop communications for socio-economically, ethnically and culturally diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, create effective systems/processes, juggle multiple tasks, and adhere to deadlines.
  • Proficiency with social media, MailChimp or similar email platforms & donor database management.
  • Applicants with Spanish language abilities are highly desired.
