STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The Pharmacy Director is responsible for directing, coordinating, and controlling the operations of the Pharmacy Department. This includes ensuring compliance with patient care quality standards, managing the purchase and inventory of pharmaceuticals and related supplies, and overseeing departmental planning, revenue analysis, budgeting, education, and human resource management. The Pharmacy Director is instrumental in driving excellence and fostering innovation to enhance healthcare services for the region.
Full-time - exempt, benefited position working 80 hours per pay period. Days of work are Monday - Friday
JOB FUNCTIONS
Quality
- Develops and implements comprehensive guidelines for the assessment, evaluation, planning, and documentation of medication use across all patient age groups.
- Collaborates with nursing, medical staff, and clinical department leaders to uphold and enhance the quality of patient care.
- Leads performance improvement initiatives within the Pharmacy Department, ensuring adherence to patient care standards and medical practice regulations.
- Manages the secure storage and accurate distribution of pharmaceutical items, maintaining strict compliance with Federal and State regulations and inventory control protocols.
- Maintains and updates departmental resources, including formularies, reference texts, and professional journals, to support informed decision-making and staff education.
Service
- Oversees, directs, and manages the overall operations of the Pharmacy Department to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
- Coordinates the seamless integration of the Pharmacy Department’s functions with other areas of patient care to support a holistic healthcare approach.
- Actively participates in the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and other hospital committees, contributing to institutional goals and initiatives.
- Represents the hospital in professional and industry associations, promoting a positive image and fostering collaborative relationships.
- Performs the full scope of responsibilities of a staff pharmacist, ensuring high standards of care and operational support.
People
- Leads and manages human resource functions for the Pharmacy Department, including recruitment, promotion, orientation, and conducting performance evaluations to foster a high-performing team.
- Oversees and facilitates educational experiences for pharmacy and pharmacy technician students, ensuring alignment with program objectives and enhancing learning outcomes.
- Directs and coordinates in-service training programs to ensure staff maintain and advance their skills and knowledge, meeting the highest standards of professional practice.
- Stays informed about industry trends and developments by engaging with professional networks, attending seminars, and applying best practices to departmental operations.
Finance
- Evaluates the Pharmacy Department's revenue streams to ensure alignment with reimbursement regulations and the maintenance of competitive pricing structures.
- Prepares and analyzes detailed reports on service utilization and revenue performance, implementing proactive measures to address trends and opportunities.
- Oversees the development and management of the Pharmacy Department's annual budget, monitoring financial performance and addressing variances to optimize efficiency.
- Establishes and maintains accurate records for patient charges, requisitioning, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals, ensuring strict compliance with regulations governing narcotics and other controlled substances.
Growth
- Leads the development, revision, and implementation of goals, policies, and standards for the Pharmacy Department, ensuring alignment with institutional objectives and compliance with JCAHO standards.
- Oversees and coordinates initiatives to address pharmaceutical service challenges, including conducting both prospective and retrospective clinical reviews to optimize patient outcomes.
- Cultivates partnerships with industry professionals and professional associations to enhance the Pharmacy Department's and institution's reputation and influence.
- Champions educational and professional growth through robust staff development programs and student education initiatives, fostering a culture of continuous learning and excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION: (PHARMACY MANAGER)
1. PREPARATION AND TRAINING - Requires professional level of knowledge in specialized field which is equivalent to that which is acquired through the completion of one year of post graduate internship.
Graduate of college of pharmacy accredited by The American Council of Pharmaceutical Education.
Licensed by the North Dakota Board of Pharmacy.
Completion of a residency program is highly preferred.
2. WORK EXPERIENCE - Three to five years of experience in an acute care hospital setting within a Pharmacy Department.
Supervisory or project management experience is required.
3. ANALYTICAL ABILITY - A high level of problem solving skills is required.
4. INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT - Receive assignments in form of results expected, due dates.
5. CONTACTS WITH OTHERS - A high level of interpersonal and communication skills are required in order to negotiate with gain acceptance of or change the thinking of others.
6. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Involves the establishment of policies and procedures for a recognized department - level organizational component or a leadership role in the establishment of hospital wide policies in one functional area only.
7. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY EFFORT - Constant, standing or walking, occasional sitting. Frequent use of finger dexterity required to handle IV's, medications and computer keyboard. Must be able to frequently reach small items from shelves ranging from floor level to 7 feet high. Frequently requires ability to move around in aisles less than 30 inches wide. Occasionally need to move boxes weighing up to 30 lbs.
8. MENTAL/VISUAL EFFORT - Work requires constant attention to detail for accuracy. Must be able to speak and write the English language understandable. Visual acuity necessary. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
9. WORKING CONDITIONS - Subject to frequent interruptions. Occasional exposure to hazardous materials. Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, when necessary. Participates in and complies with JRMC Safety Management program. Maintains knowledge of and observes Standard Precautions. Practices aseptic technique wherever appropriate. OSHA job classification: This position is defined as a Category I in which the employee does have exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
