Job Summary:
The RN Unit Manager oversees nursing staff and daily operations within the assigned unit, ensuring high-quality, compassionate care and compliance with regulatory standards. This role involves managing staffing, supporting new staff orientation, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and ensuring adherence to company and healthcare regulations. The RN Unit Manager serves as a key resource for staff and residents, participates in budget management, and supports quality assurance and resident satisfaction efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Staff Management and Scheduling (25%)
- Develop and manage the unit's staffing plan and oversee coverage of shifts, including call-ins and emergencies.
- Lead new staff orientation and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
- Facilitate interviews, probationary reviews, and annual performance evaluations for unit staff.
- Support staff retention efforts and foster a positive work environment through mentorship and team-building.
- Unit Operations and Quality Assurance (25%)
- Conduct daily rounds and ensure quality care for all residents, promptly addressing any concerns or changes in condition.
- Coordinate weekly and quarterly quality assurance checks, participating in department-wide initiatives.
- Oversee the unit's cleanliness and upkeep to meet Nursing Department standards and maintain a safe, welcoming environment.
- Ensure adequate par stock for supplies on the unit and communicate needs to maintain efficiency.
- Care Coordination and Resident Advocacy (15%)
- Participate in resident care planning meetings, advocating for resident needs and adjusting care plans as needed.
- Act as a liaison for hospice care and other specialized services to enhance residents' quality of life.
- Uphold resident rights and respond to concerns with empathy and professionalism, fostering a supportive care environment.
- Compliance and Training (10%)
- Follow all HIPAA privacy regulations, maintaining confidentiality for residents and staff.
- Attend all mandatory in-services, meetings, and training sessions to ensure compliance with facility standards and regulatory updates.
- Demonstrate a commitment to compassionate, customer-focused care to ensure residents' satisfaction and uphold the organization's values.
- Administrative and Reporting Responsibilities (10%)
- Prepare and submit payroll reports, weekly staffing reports, and budget reviews for management.
- Maintain an organized communication book, documenting relevant updates and directives for unit staff.
- Ensure accurate documentation, meeting regulatory and quality standards, and maintain survey-readiness.
- Leadership and Team Collaboration (10%)
- Serve as a resource for staff, supporting clinical and administrative needs, and facilitating open communication.
- Attend committee meetings and participate in policy development and standards review, completing assignments as required.
- Act as a weekend resource manager on a rotating basis to support facility-wide operations and resident needs.
- Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Qualifications:
- Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Licensure: Current RN license in the state of practice.
- Certification: Maintain current CPR certification.
- Experience: Minimum two (2) years’ experience as an RN. Experience in a long-term care or skilled nursing facility preferred. Management experience preferred.
- Skills: Knowledge of nursing and medical practices, regulatory guidelines for long-term care, and experience with staff supervision. Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with residents, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, turn, move and transport residents, and perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, walking, and standing for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Capacity to handle stressful situations and respond to emergencies calmly and effectively.
- Work is performed in a healthcare environment, with exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and potentially hazardous materials.
- Must be able to work various shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
