Job Summary
The Cytotechnologist/Grossing Technologist must promote good public relations for the department while maintaining patient/customer confidentiality. The Cytotechnologist/Grossing Technologist is responsible for performing the microscopic slide examination and documenting the interpreted results of each gynecologic and nongynecologic cytology case he or she examined or reviews. The Cytotechnologist/Grossing Technologist is responsible for recording specified descriptions, weights, and measurements on designated surgical specimen types, and submitting routine sections.
Essential Functions
- Quality
- Responsible for the diagnostic aspects of the cytology section.
- Maintains an active quality control program which encompasses technologists' performance, education, and procedures as well as statistical evaluation of results.
- Utilizes protocols and procedures considered acceptable by the American Society for Cytology.
- Provides a means of reviewing all pertinent patient results and procedures to ensure that all quality control and assurance mechanisms are adhered to, as well as ensuring cohesiveness of determination based on patient laboratory test history and / or clinical history.
- Performs routine and special cytology procedures on body fluids and / or fluids if needed to provide information for diagnosing and combating disease, processes such specimens according to good practices of clinical laboratory science, and ensures section conforms with licensure requirements regarding screening limitations.
- Writes legibly and accurately, with complete documentation.
- Verifies the name of tube or specimen with requisition, and investigates abnormal results, correlates test results with diagnosis, and questions incompatible results.
- Quantity / Timeliness
- Ensures the daily efficient operation of the section in a manner consistent with the philosophies of the department director and hospital administration.
- Job Knowledge
- Adheres to all requirements of TJC, CLIA, and State Law.
- Assist the Pathology Section Leader with policy and procedure preparation and updates.
- Operates all related cytology equipment. Communicates with the Pathology Section Leader concerning problems with equipment in need of repairs and/or preventative maintenance.
- Coordinates activities of the laboratory's quality assurance, education, safety, hazardous material and other administrative functions as applicable in consultation with the Assistant Laboratory Director and other section leaders as may be applicable.
- Practices and supports safety in the workplace by using PPE (goggles, lab jackets, gloves, etc.)
- Interacts with patients of all ages. Can be called upon to assist in the collection or evaluation of fine needle aspirates.
- Dependability / Initiative / Cooperation
- Provides continuing education and training for staff personnel when needed.
- Notifies the laboratory medical director as appropriate when aberrations in the patient testing process, which may have yielded potential patient harm or resulted in a misdiagnosis by physicians.
- Provides various data and reports as requested by laboratory management as related to aspects of the cytology section.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology, Biological Science, or Chemis required
- 1-2 years hospital based experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Screening of Non-Gyn, FNA and Gyn experience required. Molecular, FISH, and histology experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- CN-CYTO - Certified Cytotechnologist ASCP certification required
