Summary
Responsible for recruiting, coordinating and directing volunteer services committed to the philosophy, goals and objectives of the hospice program; Upholds the philosophy, core values and goals of the organization and ensures that the Christian Mission of Lutheran Senior Services is realized - “Older Adults Living Life to the Fullest”.
Responsibilities
Responsible for screening, selecting, supervising, evaluating and counseling of volunteers for the hospice volunteer program, to ensure these individuals meet the highest standards of personal integrity, emotional maturity, responsibility, flexibility and sensitivity to the needs of the dying patient and family; Performs annual evaluations for all hospice volunteers
Interfaces with the Director of Volunteers and Community Engagement and Director of Hospice to direct the overall development and enhancement of the hospice volunteer program, including establishing goals and objectives of the program
Develops and conducts a continuing program for recruitment, training, and retention of hospice volunteers
Assigns hospice volunteers to meet program needs appropriate to volunteers’ interests and skills
Coordinates and participates in volunteer training and orientation sessions
Responsible for creating, maintaining, and revising all pertinent materials (training manuals, policies, etc.) for hospice volunteers
Responsible for documenting and tracking appropriate volunteer statistical information and other volunteer program records in designated computer database and other designated areas
Assesses and identifies hospice volunteers’ educational needs and implements appropriate programs
Seeks opportunities to participate in exhibits, workshops and community meetings where there is an opportunity to promote community awareness about volunteerism and hospice
Develops and maintains relationships with clergy, individuals and organizations within the community necessary to support the outreach activities of the hospice volunteer program
Assists with ongoing internal and external community relations program to maintain ties with potential volunteers and organizations. This includes, but is not limited to, participating in the “We Honor Veterans” program and educating staff, volunteers, and the communities, tracking and providing appropriate recognition to veteran hospice patients
Evaluates own needs for support and using identified system(s) to meet the need(s)
Provides administrative support to the LSS-wide Volunteer program and department, including but is not limited to assisting with mailings, supply acquisition, maintaining recruitment and training supplies, assembling training folders and binders, and sorting in-coming mail
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Must be able to complete all physical demands of the job, which may include, but not limited to,: the ability to lift and transfer patients, carry supplies, and read normal typewritten print. Have corrected vision and hearing within normal range and have manual dexterity with normal range of motion of all extremities. May be requested to work weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime. Must be able to work alone without usual support systems immediately available in acute care settings. Must have the ability to deal with abrupt schedule changes and to maintain objectivity in coping with the stress of working with acute, chronic and terminally ill patients.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Associates degree
- Prior experience in a related professional capacity, supervising a program, program development and/or administration
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Ability to plan, organize and supervise volunteers; Communicates both orally and in writing; experience with a hospice program preferred; experience in using computer
- Must demonstrate a willingness to coordinate efforts with all hospice team members (physicians, nursing supervisor, social worker, chaplain and caregivers) while placing a volunteer on the patient’s care team
- Must have the ability to effectively cope with patients, families, volunteers and all others of varying backgrounds, socioeconomic conditions, and value judgements
