What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Garden Specialist position at Lutheran Services in Iowa?
LSI seeks a part-time (24 to 29 hours per week) Community Garden Specialist for the Refugee Community Services in the Des Moines area.
DUTIES
Community Garden Specialist will coordinate and maintain community garden referrals for clients who have come to United States as refugees. CGS will manage LSI's community garden waitlist and work closely with the City of Des Moines and other private community gardens to coordinate plot assignments and garden orientations. CGS will engage with local land owners interested in starting community gardens in areas where many refugee families are living and offer general technical assistance and referrals for gardeners from LSI wait list. CGS will manage infrastructure updates and enhancements at gardens that LSI helps operate. CGS will also work closely with bilingual interpreters on staff to ensure appropriate communication with clients at garden locations.
Speaking a language of the clients in the program will be considered an asset (Nepali, Kirundi, Swahili, a Chin language, or Burmese).
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Bachelor's degree and minimum of one year of related experience OR Associates degree and 3 years of related experience OR significant experience in the core areas in lieu of minimum education. Must be able to work independently with limited supervision and demonstrate culturally competent social skills and interactions.
