POSITION: Bilingual Youth Care Worker – Transporter – Unaccompanied Minors Program
REPORTS TO: Team Supervisor and Program Supervisor
CLASSIFICATION: Full Time
STATUS: Hourly, Non-Exempt
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Safe Haven for Children Program is a 24-hour shelter and transitional foster care program that serves unaccompanied children (UCs) in immigration custody who are awaiting release to their sponsors. The Youth Care Worker-Transporter provides transportation services to these minors to ensure receipt of essential services such as: medical, mental health, and dental care, basic education, orientation, and legal screening. They supervise the minors at all times, maintaining required supervision ratio and ensure all minors are accounted for.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Pick up young persons from airport or other transportation hubs and bring them to shelter or the homes of identified foster parents.
- Transport minors to and from medical services, health screening, mental health assessment appointments, legal appointments, visitation, recreational activities, and other locations as directed by program director.
- Monitor and supervise minors at all times during transport and throughout the day
- Record in full detail all pertinent information in applicable databases and logs prior to ending each shift.
- Review and ensure the accuracy of all transportation logs; scan and uploads to SharePoint.
- Train incoming staff on the proper use of all agency vehicles.
- Conduct road tests of staff needing to become an approved driver.
- Perform all necessary vehicle maintenance, when applicable
- Ensure that program vehicles remain in compliance with NYS motor vehicle regulations, i.e. inspections and registrations are completed
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations, including but not limited to HIPAA.
- Adhere to program guidelines and schedules.
- Enforce all safety rules and regulations in accordance with agency policies and procedures, and ensure that minors comply with established house rules.
- Document and report all major and minor incidents in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
- Provide a stable, abuse and drug free environment.
- Performs all other tasks as assigned, including all Youth Care Worker duties.
- On-call 24 hours (where applicable).
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
EXPERIENCE:
- One year’s experience driving 15-passenger vans and facilitating program transportation.
- One year’s experience working with youth in a child welfare setting.
SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER:
- New York State Driver’s License in good standing
- Good communication and writing skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with consumers and co-workers
- Knowledgeable about working with immigrant youth
- Superior organizational skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; resourceful; ability to manage time effectively and multi-task
- Ability to exercise enormous amount of patience and good judgment
- Knowledgeable about appropriate ACS/OCFS regulations regarding disciplinary actions
- Experience and facility with Microsoft Office Applications
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed, including holidays, weekends, and overnights.
- Must be able to lift/carry 30 lbs. with or without assistance.
