ABOUT THIS ROLE
As the Director of Hardware Engineering, you will be responsible for leading and scaling a world-class hardware team that includes electrical and mechanical engineers. You will drive the architecture, development, and validation of our IoT hardware products, collaborating cross-functionally with firmware, software, product management, and operations teams.
This role requires a technical leader with strong product development experience, a deep understanding of electrical and mechanical design, and a proven track record of bringing IoT or embedded hardware products to market.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead, mentor, and scale a multidisciplinary team of electrical, mechanical, electro-mechanical, and sensor integration engineers to drive product innovation and execution.
- Define the hardware engineering organizational roadmap, ensuring alignment with company goals, customer needs, and market trends.
- Establish and drive best practices in hardware development, validation, and manufacturing.
- Establish best practices for make/buy decision making to ensure that products meet end use requirements in an economical and timely manner.
- Partner with software, firmware, and product teams to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software systems.
Product Development & Execution
- Own the full hardware development lifecycle, from concept and prototyping to design for manufacturability (DFM) and production ramp-up, including a requirements management and validation/verification process.
- Own direction and ensure support of PLM/CAD/E-CAD and other software tools necessary for hardware development.
- Ensure electrical and mechanical designs meet performance, reliability, and cost targets.
- Oversee PCB design, power systems, sensors, connectivity (Wi-Fi, BLE, LPWAN, etc.), and thermal/mechanical constraints.
- Oversee the development and integration of a portfolio of in-house/3rd party cameras, sensors, actuators, and other POE devices
- Review and approve key design decisions, schematics, layouts, and mechanical assemblies.
- Collaborate with suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure smooth production and supply chain optimization.
Technical Innovation & Problem-Solving
- Stay ahead of emerging technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes to enhance product performance and cost efficiency.
- Lead failure analysis, root cause investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives to improve reliability.
- Optimize power consumption, RF performance, thermal efficiency, and mechanical robustness in product designs.
Operational & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with product management to translate customer needs into hardware requirements.
- Partner with firmware and software teams to ensure seamless system integration.
- Drive compliance and certification efforts (FCC, UL, CE, etc.).
- Manage budgets, timelines, and resource allocation to meet product launch schedules.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 10 years of hardware engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Proven track record of shipping IoT, embedded systems, consumer electronics, or industrial hardware products.
- Strong expertise in both electrical and mechanical engineering, including PCB design, power systems, RF, thermal management, and mechanical enclosures.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers, supply chain partners, and production ramp-up.
- Deep understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFT (Design for Testability).
- Knowledge of embedded systems, sensors, connectivity (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LPWAN, POE, etc.), and low-power design.
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance and testing (FCC, CE, UL, etc.).
- Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.
