Their goal was to equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in an ever-growing multicultural global society. As the sole accredited 18-month through 12th-grade bilingual school in Houston, the Lycée International de Houston offers a unique dual-language immersion program in both French and English. By combining the analytical thinking methods of the French Ministry of Education (AEFE) with the dynamic American Curriculum, the school remains dedicated to maintaining academic excellence. Position:
Lycée International de Houston seeks a College Counselor / School Librarian for the 2025-2026 School year. This role would primarily advise students on college applications and career paths. With experience working with high school students, knowledge of college admissions processes, membership in professional organizations like NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling), and ideally, prior experience working in a college admissions office or as a high school counselor while also actively managing our K to 12 library resource centers containing over 3000 volumes. In addition, we will add college catalogs, scholarship information, and other relevant materials, essentially functioning as a specialized librarian focused on higher education research and planning for students while meeting the needs of the students and teachers regarding daily cataloging of material.
Required skills and qualifications:
- A Masters’ Degree (preferred) or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in counseling, education, or a related field
- Strong understanding of the college admissions process, including application requirements and financial aid options
- Knowledge of a wide range of universities, including Ivy League, NESCACs, State University systems, and overseas universities
- Experience teaching or working in an independent, private, boarding, college preparatory, or like-kind school setting
- Exceptional public speaking, writing, organization, and communication skills
- Ability to perform well under pressure and to meet deadlines
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively guide students and build relationships with parents, school administration, and college admissions offices
- Ability to read people well, communicate clearly and firmly, and exercise both discretion and transparency
- Sensitivity, openness, and approachability
- Strong references that convey your college counseling abilities
- Skills, talents, and flexibility for contributing to the independent school community in additional capacities. For example: Coaching sports, advising extracurricular activities, supervising a dorm at a boarding school, etc.
- Expertise in library research methods and database navigation
- Organizational skills to manage student data, application timelines, and library resources
- Proficiency with technology to maintain online databases and utilize digital tools for research and communication
Key responsibilities:
College application guidance:
Assist students with researching potential colleges, completing applications, writing essays, and navigating the admissions process through the Naviance Portal.
Career counseling:
Help students explore career options, identify relevant majors, and develop career plans.
Individual student consultations:
Meet with students one-on-one to discuss their college plans, application concerns, and career goals.
Information literacy workshops:
Teach students how to effectively research colleges using library databases and online resources.
College visit coordination:
Organize college visits and information sessions with representatives from various institutions.
Data analysis and reporting:
Track student progress, monitor application trends, and provide data-driven insights to inform college counseling strategies.
Collaboration with faculty and staff:
Partner with teachers and other school personnel to integrate college planning into the curriculum.
Resource library management:
Maintain a collection of college catalogs, scholarship guides, financial aid information, and other pertinent materials, both print and digital. Also, manage the collection of books in the library including new acquisitions.
Community and Team Engagement:
- Participate in faculty, departmental, and curriculum meetings as scheduled by the Head of School.
- Contribute to school-wide events such as open houses, parent meetings, field trips, fairs, and festivals.
- Collaborate with colleagues to create a cohesive educational experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to monitor and manage student discipline and progress actively.
- Capable of moving about the classroom to engage students and facilitate activities.
- Physically able to lift and carry light library materials as needed.
