Job Description
Lycée International de Houston is seeking a History and Social Studies Teacher for Middle and High School levels for the 2025-2026 School Year. The ideal candidate will have expertise in teaching history and social studies within the Texas state curriculum, fostering critical thinking, and creating engaging lessons that connect students to past and present societal issues. Requirements
- Master’s degree (preferred) or bachelor’s degree in history or a closely related field
- Minimum of three years’ teaching experience in a middle or high school setting.
- Strong knowledge of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Social Studies.
- Experience teaching IB Social Studies (SL/HL) and/or AP courses
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency in using technology and educational software for interactive teaching and learning.
- Positivity, open-mindedness, and adaptability to a multicultural environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- A love and enthusiasm for teaching history, social studies, and/or humanities
- Skills, talents, and flexibility for contributing to the school community in additional capacity, including coaching sports, and advising clubs.
- Additional history-related skills and work experience that can enrich an independent school community. For example: Organizing a history club, speech and debate, advising student publications, or serving as a liaison with a local historical society.
- Legal work authorization in the United States.
Responsibilities
- Teach History and Social Studies courses for middle and high school levels, ensuring alignment with the Texas state curriculum (TEKS).
- Develop and implement engaging and rigorous lesson plans that cover key topics such as U.S. History, Texas History, World History, Government, Speech and Debate and Economics.
- Foster critical thinking, analytical skills, and historical inquiry by engaging students in discussions, debates, and projects.
- Incorporate diverse perspectives and real-world applications to make history and social studies relevant to students.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including EAL students and those requiring academic accommodations.
- Utilize technology and online platforms effectively to enhance instruction and student engagement.
- Regularly assess students understanding through formative and summative evaluations, providing constructive feedback.
- Communicate student progress to parents and guardians in a professional and timely manner.
- Build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues to create a supportive learning environment.
- Collaborate with colleagues to design interdisciplinary projects and support school-wide initiatives.
- Participate in school events and activities such as open houses, parent-teacher conferences, field trips, and exhibitions.
- Take on additional responsibilities, such as lunch/recess duty, carpool supervision, and after-school homework or study hall support.
- Attend and contribute to faculty, department, and subject meetings as scheduled by the Head of School.
- Stay informed of best practices in history and social studies education and pursue professional development opportunities.
Physical Requirements
- Physically capable of moving about the classroom to engage with students and facilitate both small and large group instruction.
- Able to monitor student behavior, discipline, and progress effectively.
- Active engagement in all academic and extracurricular duties
