The principal’s primary responsibility is to provide leadership, oversight and accountability at the school level for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive educational program that fosters student academic
growth, development and success, and to administer the program in accordance with school board policies and regulations.The principal provides a high level of care, as well as, high expectations for all students. This is a community leadership
position that requires the ability to build impactful and long-lasting relationships with all stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Works with staff and parents/guardians to formulate a vision and mission statement and a comprehensive annual school plan consistent with the goals and commitments of the school division as outlined in the Division Strategic Plan.
- Provides creative leadership to develop meaningful opportunities to develop life- ready students.
- Creates partnerships with mental health agencies, local non-profits, and community organizations to provide wrap-around support for students and families.
- Implements and sustains mental health support for students and staff.
- Fully engages with and implements a holistic school-wide system of Restorative Practices.
- Engrains trauma-informed practices within the school’s systems.
- Creates a highly effective data-driven Professional Learning Community.
- Collaborates with Student Services to improve, create, and implement impactful programming.
- Assigns staff to groups/duties based upon student needs, staff strengths and school board policy.
- Assumes leadership in the development of grade level or departmental goals consistent with those of the school division as outlined in the Division Strategic Plan.
- Facilitates all scheduling relative to an effective instructional program.
- Monitors academic progress of students to include analyzing test data and pass/fail rates and provides leadership in developing a plan of action to address student and/or instructional needs.
- Improves current school systems and practices, placing an emphasis on attendance, on-time graduation, and drop-out rate.
- Monitors the delivery of curriculum for effectiveness relative to student learning and provides leadership in the implementation of an action plan designed to meet student needs.
- Monitors the application of technology to instruction.
- Plans and implements building level staff development programs that focus on the Division Strategic Plan.
- Supervises and evaluates all school personnel, in accordance with school board policies and regulations.
- Works cooperatively with the Human Resources Department to select, retain, recognize, and promote employees.
- Establishes and promotes a positive school climate that fosters cooperative working relationships among staff members, encourages success, communicates high expectations and recognizes accomplishments of staff and students.
- Works cooperatively with all school employees, especially other school principals and division-level leaders..
- Establishes and maintains a high standard of student conduct in order to provide a positive learning environment.
- Communicates all administrative memoranda, division policies and regulations, and school rules to the appropriate school staff, students, parents/guardians, and members of the community.
- Plans, administers, and supervises the use and efficient operation of school facilities and ensures that the school plant and facilities are attractive, clean, safe and secure.
- Plans, administers, and manages the school budget and monitors financial procedures of groups authorized or recognized by the school board.
- Participates in professional development activities.
- Implements policies, regulations and directives of the school division to include timely preparation of reports, lists and other requested paperwork.
- Works actively with parents/guardians and community to foster positive public relations to include support of civic and community activities/organizations.
- Collaborates with parents/guardians, staff, and community resource organizations to plan for transition of students from secondary school to post-secondary options (i.e. workforce, college, military, etc)
- Delegates the authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.

- Possess a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision Prek-12.
- Three years of teaching experience required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
- Directly supervises all school employees including but not limited to the administrative, custodial, coaching, instructional, and student support staff
- Participates in the hiring process and makes hiring decisions of other employees Instructs, trains, coaches, and mentors other employees
- Schedules (determine hours worked, time off), reviews, and monitors the work of other employees
- Completes written evaluations of other employees
