The job of Instructional Assistant Bilingual is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program within assigned classroom with specific responsibility for working with students individually or in small groups in assisting in the assessment of students' English language acquisition from their native language, performing classroom clerical tasks, and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with non-English speaking persons.
This job reports to designated administrator. - Representative Duties

Essential Functions
Administers classroom assignments, tests, homework assignments, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments and skills practice for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards.
Attends meetings, in-service presentations, and professional development for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents/guardians for the purpose of assisting in evaluating student progress.
Implements, under the supervision of the teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
Monitors individual and/or small groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, library, cafeteria, bus loading/unloading, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
Reports observations and incidents (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
Scaffolds from the student's primary language to English and from English to primary language for the purpose of facilitating understanding, supporting academic instruction, and acquisition of the English language.
Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of curriculum and teaching methodologies.
Translates verbal and written communication(s) and learning materials, as needed, from English to Spanish and Spanish to English for the purpose of assisting students, teachers, and parents/guardians in communicating.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from high school OR General Education Development (GED) equivalent.
- ALL CANDIDATES MUST TAKE AND OBTAIN A PASSING SCORE on the Lynwood Unified School District Instructional Assistant Proficiency Assessment (Written Examination), which meets a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrates, through a formal academic assessment, knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
- One (1) year of job related experience.
- Fluently speak, read, write, and translate information in English and a designated second language with accuracy.
- Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: translating written documents; operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation in both English and Second Language; age appropriate activities.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups including those with limited English proficiency and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization's services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.
