Chair of Biomedical Sciences- The Lyon College Institute of Health Sciences invites applications for the Chair of Biomedical Sciences position. This is an outstanding opportunity for an associate professor or professor to lead a vibrant, department of biomedical sciences with brand new, state of the art teaching facilities. The department incorporates faculty members in the fields of biomedical sciences and behavioral sciences including anatomy/physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, histology, etc. The department chair is responsible for leading the department faculty members in support of the 3-year DMD program (didactic, pre-clinical and clinical); participation in continued development of cutting-edge resources to enable high quality, rigorous scholarship of faculty, staff and trainees; and implementation of strategic plans to strengthen the academic and clinical missions through hiring and community building.
Teamwork is an essential function of the role of the Chair of Biomedical Sciences who will work closely with the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, the Assistant of Dean of Student Affairs and Admissions, and the Chair Clinical Sciences. The Chair or Biomedical Sciences will report to the Dean/Chief Academic Officer.
The department of biomedical sciences is inclusive, diverse, creative, and dynamic with strong research and biomedical faculty. The responsibilities of the chair include accomplishing the priorities set by the school on the basis of our strategic plan. The department chair has responsibility for the overall administration and leadership of the academic department including planning and goal setting, financial
stewardship, faculty development, oversight of DMD educational programs, and support of school and university service initiatives.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD, DDS or DMD, or equivalent doctoral degree. Top candidates will have an international reputation as a scholar with outstanding and innovative research accomplishments, leadership experience, knowledge of key aspects of education in modern academic dentistry, and strong contributions in fostering inclusion, diversity and equity to enhance excellence in academic endeavors.
Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
ï· PhD, DDS, DMD or equivalent degree.
ï· Comprehensive teaching skills.
ï· Broad knowledge of issues in dental education and specifically clinical oral health matters.
ï· Preferably at least 7 years’ experience in dental education and the institutional level, working in implementation, evaluation and monitoring of an educational program leading to a dental degree.
ï· Demonstrated experience working with effective teams to identify and resolve problems.
ï· Responsible for the management and oversight of the biomedical sciences curriculum, including logistics, teaching schedule, curriculum integration and instruction.
ï· Responsible for the management and oversight of faculty development and calibration.
ï· Responsible for annual faculty performance review process and execution.
ï· Responsible for reporting outcomes to the Dean, Associate/Assistant Deans, and Chair of Clinical Sciences.
ï· Responsibility of preparing students for the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (iNBDE) including practice board exams
and student preparation processes.
ï· Responsible for handling student issues.
ï· Responsible for accreditation reports and activities.
ï· Regular attendance is an essential function of the job.
ï· May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
ï·Candidates will have a broad set of skills and assets deemed important for success as the next Chair of Biomedical Sciences. The successful candidate will embody many of the following qualifications and attributes:
ï· Demonstrated experience in dental school leadership.
ï· Demonstrated experience working closely or directly with senior dental school administration, university administration, governing boards for higher education and accrediting agencies.
ï· Demonstrated experience and leadership responsibility with professional organizations dedicated to education and dental education.
ï·Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures.
Work Conditions:
ï· Work is primarily indoors but requires the incumbent to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between local campus buildings, off campus, and to other Lyon College facilities.
ï· Performing duties and attending events outside the normally scheduled work hours occasionally occurs and is required.
ï· Traveling off-campus to a local, state, regional and/or national event, as well as travel to other Lyon campuses or facilities occurs occasionally and is required.
ï· Incumbent may be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones, office machines, and nearby oral communications among college Personnel and/or students.
ï· Work hours may vary due to clinic schedules. Required Physical Abilities
ï· Ability to bend, stoop, reach, stand, move from one area of the building to another on a regular basis, sit and use a computer for a long period of time.
ï· Manual and physical dexterity needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents.
ï· Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on computer display screen, hand-written forms, and printed on paper.
ï· Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
ï· Ability to lift and carry a stack of forms and documents weighing up to 25 pounds.
